Chapter 44 - Chapter 044: Another New Recruit—Basil Hawkins!

On the deck.

"The captain's found another one! I hope this one's a real fighter. I've been waiting forever to become the First Division Captain! Wahahaha…"

Burgess raised both arms, his face full of excitement.

Doc Q coughed and added,

"Just hope it's not another Trafalgar Law. Anything but that is fine."

Lafitte twirled his cane, ever the polite gentleman.

"Law simply wasn't interested in being a division captain. Otherwise, with his strength, he'd at least be a Second Division Captain."

Law, holding his cursed blade Kikoku, said coldly,

"There are still too few people. Once we get six or seven, we can just settle it with a brawl."

Sweetheart Empress glanced at them, clearly speechless.

"Every time good luck shows up, you guys always want to fight over division captain spots. Is that really so fun?"

"Men are all the same—they worship strength and settle everything with fists,"

Reiju smiled sweetly at her.

"That's just how men are. Can't really blame them."

Reiju actually supported Chris's rules aboard the ship.

Chris used absolute strength to intimidate everyone and encouraged structured competition.

That kind of system would definitely raise everyone's power quickly.

It was honestly… a brilliant strategy.

"Let's move."

Chris didn't waste words. He jumped down directly, landing in Callett Town.

This time, Padon didn't follow Chris—instead, he leapt onto Bepo's shoulder.

These two animals had become sworn brothers recently, and their relationship was great.

Soon, the whole crew had disembarked and headed into the town...

In town, on a bustling street…

The area was lively, with shops on both sides—makeup stores, clothing boutiques...

At the end of the street, many people had set up stalls, selling jewelry, seafood, and all kinds of items. It was a dazzling display.

Among them was one stall with a sign that read: "Fortune Telling."

"How much does a reading cost?"

A passerby looked at the fortune teller curiously.

Hawkins played with his tarot cards, calm and composed.

"Whether I tell your fortune depends on the person."

"You're nothing special, so I won't predict your future."

The passerby was stunned, not sure how to react.

What did that even mean? He wanted to pay and still got turned down?

A neighboring vendor laughed loudly.

"This young man is weird. He's not doing this to make money—it's just a hobby."

"He's always like this. We're used to it. There's just no dealing with him."

Other stall owners chuckled too, their laughter laced with sarcasm.

They'd known Hawkins for a while. The guy was aloof, cold, and barely talked to anyone.

He'd often upset customers with his fortune telling, acting like a weirdo.

They all looked down on him.

"Freak," the passerby muttered and walked away.

Hawkins ignored the chatter around him, head down, continuing to shuffle his cards.

That's when the sound of footsteps and voices approached.

"That's him?"

Sweetheart Empress looked at the man ahead and furrowed her brows.

"Weird eyebrows, odd eyes and nose. How do I put it…

He gives off this gloomy, creepy vibe. Super uncomfortable."

Betty puffed her cigarette, calm as ever.

"Looks don't matter. As long as he's strong, that's enough."

Perona flew above them with a pout.

"So ugly. This princess doesn't like him."

Reiju touched her delicate chin and offered her analysis.

"He does look like a fortune teller. Could his power be predicting the future?

If so, that'd be incredibly powerful."

Burgess shrugged, sounding disappointed.

"No way. This guy doesn't look strong at all."

Lafitte adjusted his top hat and said gently,

"If Big Sis Bakara picked him, then he must be capable."

Law frowned, his tone cold.

"This guy… gives me a weird feeling."

While everyone was commenting, Hawkins stopped playing with his cards and slowly looked up at the newcomers.

Leading the group was a man in black clothes—calm, composed, and radiating a unique presence.

The others, male and female, all looked incredibly strong.

Then the man in black spoke—expressionless, voice calm.

"Let me introduce myself. I'm Chris, captain of the Chris Pirates."

"I just happened to pass by and thought your strength was worthy of joining my crew."

Chris looked directly at Hawkins.

"Since you're good at fortune telling, then tell me—what is your upcoming fate?"

No one else spoke. They just quietly watched Hawkins, waiting for his answer.

Hawkins didn't acknowledge them at first. His hands moved quickly as he shuffled the cards.

"Battle… defeat rate: 100%."

He drew a card, glanced at it, and said quietly.

Then he placed it aside and drew again.

"Escape… success rate: 0%."

As everyone watched Hawkins predict the future, they all found it very interesting.

Sweetheart Empress's beautiful eyes sparkled with curiosity.

"So this is what his 'fortune telling' is like!"

"Seems… surprisingly accurate."
