Chapter 15 - Wanting too much

Rosa almost instantly exploded, just as Professor Sing moved forward with a huge smile, and the student admired her multi-colored crystal pendant that hung close to her throat. Her rage was not aimed at anyone but everyone, except Hazel, froze.

"That was not divination!!!!! That was a parlor trick! Everyone in here could do something like that if we asked Professor Adder."

She huffed and puffed and opened her mouth to release more and Hazel stepped forward. The entire room seemed to get even quieter than before as everyone held their breath.

"If you think it is an illusion." Hazel shrugged. Professor Adder was the potions professor and the head of Xason house, and her hobby was illusion. Of course the school did not teach illusion because most witches and wizards had the wrong idea about illusions, and felt they were just parlor tricks. Xason always won the wizard chess tournaments and many said she used her knowledge of illusions to win.

"I have nothing to prove to you Rosa. If you believe what you felt, making it what you know, to be false then fine. Believe it as such." She turned to the student that she had just divined and helped her to her feet to rest with the others.

True divination took more of a toll on the one being divined. The information was actually pulled from them and depending on what was sought there were varying levels of information drawn and thusly different levels of affect on those divined.

Professor Sing literally dragged Rosa from the classroom into her office.

Those who were team Rosa, like Elspeth, were fuming and giving Hazel dirty looks. Hazel sighed inwardly. When she was called to Professor Sing's office she wanted to roll her eyes. She walked to the professor's office as slowly as possible. But she still made it without someone telling her there was no need for her to go.

She stepped in and saw Professor Sing at her desk with her usual frown on her face, Rosa pouting in a chair facing the desk, and Headmistress Pillar standing in a back corner and laughing with a tall brown haired man that Hazel was sure she had seen before.

He looked at her and his Amethyst jeweled eyes reminded her of where she had seen him. It was the man speaking to Rosa in her vision. She made herself not look toward Rosa but she had been so shocked she did not school her expression and the look in his eyes told her that he knew she had seen him from somewhere before.

"Ahh! There you are my dear. Enter, enter. And where is that star bird of yours. I am sure Mr. Ambrose will want to meet her."

As soon as Shyla heard the headmistress ask about her she immediately formed herself from a burst of Starlight on Hazel's shoulder. Everyone gasped.

"Calm yourself Shyla. That was to dramatic."

"Dramatic!? I want to show this little wanna be drama queen! How dare she threaten you and those you care for!"

Hazel heard her perfectly well but all the other's actually heard was a beautiful melody of pure rage.

"I know but it is okay. Mr. Ambrose is the one who wanted to meet you."

Shyla looked to the jewel eyed man and nodded respectfully before turning another angry gaze to Rosa. Everyone in the room made note of this, especially Mr. Ambrose. Star birds were considered sacred in the world of witches and wizards and greatly associated with divination, fate and sight.

Seeing this Star bird react to Rosa in this way only solidified Hazel's importance for Mr. Ambrose. He was ready to strangle this girl. He could clearly see that this young Hazel was a Fatetress, and maybe more. He had already warned her.

"Ms. McGonagall, I am Adam Ambrose, the head of the Ambrose family and I came here to ensure that Rosa apologized to you and to make sure that she is never to offend you again."

This did not surprise Hazel, but, as Shyla calmed on her shoulder, everyone else in the room had stunned faces. Hazel smiled and looked to Rosa, whose face still held a frown.

"She wants to apologize to me?"

"Of course she does." When Mr. Ambrose saw Rosa's face he gave her a quick jab with a wand that Hazel hadn't seen in his hand.

"I!.. uuh… I apologize Hazel. I have been under a lot of stress and I allowed my jealousy to get the better of me. Please forgive me."

Professor Sing was looking at Rosa with her mouth agape but Hazel was looking at Mr. Ambrose.

"I accept your apology. Mr. Ambrose sir. Could I make a request?"

The jewel eyed man smiled broadly. "Of course you can."

Just as she was about to ask her discernment kicked in. And she knew that Michael would die sooner if she did this. She sighed and looked into Mr. Ambrose's eyes.

"That's okay. I see that if I choose that route things will be worse." She looked to Rosa. "You are very talented Rosa and we both know why you can not hit the peak that you are wishing for but understand that knowing things is not a blessing. Sight is not a gift. It is a curse, and the other is a burden. They are responsibilities I would not even wish upon you."

"Have you seen something Fatetress?"

Rosa hurmphed and the jewel eyed man ignored her.

"Unfortunately I always see things Mr. Ambrose." Hazel shrugged. "is that all you wanted of me Professor Sing?"

This tore the professor from her thoughts and she looked to headmistress Pillar who nodded. "Yes Hazel. That will be all. Can you please return to the classroom though? I need to speak with you."

"Can I please have a moment alone with her first Professor?"

Professor Sing was taken aback but then she looked to Headmistress Pillar and then to Hazel and conceded. Hazel and the jewel eyed man went to a small outer office and closed the door. Hazel had felt him, Rosa, and headmistress Pillar all try to read her. She was surprised at the headmistress but not about Professor Sing because she had given up on that long ago. Blow that they were alone jewel eyes tried so hard he actually hurt himself. Hazel looked at him calmly and took out her wand. She touched it to his abdomen and he instantly felt better. He was torn between her wand and the fact that she could heal spirit damage so easily.

"If you want to know something you'll have to ask. I will not lie to you but I may not answer you as well. But you will not see me, read me, or know me by force."

Mr. Ambrose smiled. "Where do you know me from?"

"I had a vision of you and Rosa discussing me. When you found out I am a fatetress you changed your mind about hurting me."

"Do you believe that you are the fatetress?"

Hazel looked at him for a moment and then shook her head. "That is my decision and if I decide not to become the fatetress you know that means there will not be a fatetress in my lifetime."

He nodded. He did know this. And for her to know meant quite a bit. "You will not choose?"

"I will. But not now. I think I will become in my fourth year. I have seen too much and if I take on power too quickly I have seen what it will do to me."

"Is Rosa a danger to you."

"No not really. She wants to be but my power of discernment far exceeds hers and she does not have the gift of sight. Here give her this." Hazel took out a light pink oddly shaped crystal on a light brown circular pedestal.

"She has been coveting mine. I feel you would do better with it than she would but if you like I can ask Shyla to make one for you as well."

He had taken the crystal focus in awe but his eyes almost popped out his head when he knew that more could be made.

"Now that I know of you I will have to ask you to come to the next meeting of the six families. We will have a tournament next year that you should participate in. I will call a meeting and I would like you to be there."

He watched her listen to the beautiful star bird's even more beautiful song.

"I know you need to do this but I do not like it. And you will be too young next year for the Star Gathering."

Hazel looked to jewel eyed man. "You want me to participate in the star gathering."

His eyes widened slightly as he looked to Shyla and knew beyond any doubt that they were communicating.

"Yes."

"Shyla says that I am too young."

He bowed to Shyla. "She is a bit young but you must admit that she is very powerful and very wise for her age." He looked to Hazel. "You just need to learn to dreamwalk and you will be on par with the others."

It was the way that she looked at him that told him she was already dreamwalking.

"Tonight come to me please. You can bring Madame Shyla"

"I will think about it."

"One more thing. Why are your eyes hazel?"

She looked at him and allowed her eyes to slowly change.

"Is it not a sign of a fatetress to be able to control how other's perceive her" Her eyes went back to hazel. "My father gave me these eyes. I will keep them. I tell you all of this because I know it will not harm me or anyone I love. But Rosa's jealousy will cause her to destroy herself. She needs to understand that she can not have all things under the sun."

She looked at him and when he did not speak again she bowed.

"It was very nice meeting you House leader Ambrose. I will tell my parents of this meeting. I will try to convince them to allow professor Sing to protect me there but one of them may want to go." Shyla let out a single beautiful high note. "And Shyla as well. Although I feel it will be too much for the families. She is worried about me."

He bowed. "I conceded to all your demands as long as you attend and participate next year."

"I will talk to my father after classes today." And with that Hazel left him with his thoughts.
