Chapter 28: Haki, A Chance? (2)
Fuck! It's really possible!
"Mister Broggy! Can you tell me the training method?" Reiner asked urgently, the burning eagerness in his eyes unconcealed, nor needing to be.
Broggy, however, looked somewhat troubled, scratching his head. "Although we've grasped it, we're not very proficient. As for teaching... the method might be a bit clumsy."
"Not proficient?" Reiner was surprised.
Elbaf was a giant kingdom renowned even in the New World. How could Dorry and Broggy, as leaders of the Giant Warrior Pirates, be unskilled in Haki?
Dorry spoke up, explaining, "There are all sorts of strange ability users on the sea, which is why we learned Haki. But for other battles, we primarily rely on our physical bodies and skills."
"That's right! We warriors of Elbaf believe only in fist-to-flesh combat! Gahahahaha!" Broggy added.
What kind of nonsense is that? Can't you fight fist-to-flesh with Haki!? Reiner internally fumed.
But then he looked up at the two rugged giants again. Alright, that's very giant-like.
"What? What are you guys talking about?" Luffy tilted his head, looking utterly confused.
The others, including Nami and Usopp, also looked baffled. Reiner gave them a simple explanation.
"But what is this clumsy method you mentioned?" Reiner turned back to the giants, pressing further.
Dorry and Broggy glanced at each other, then suddenly threw their heads back and laughed. "Gahahahaha! That would be getting hit!"
"..."
Alright, alright... You guys must have taught Rayleigh, huh? Black lines formed over Reiner's head in exasperation.
"Of course, not just foolishly taking hits. Haki is like..."
Broggy then began explaining to them. Knowing Luffy and the others had no concept of Haki, he elaborated further.
"Invisible armor?" Luffy touched his chin, thought for a moment, then tilted his head. "Emmm... So Haki is just armor that isn't cool at all?"
Duang!
"Idiot! How can you interpret it like that!?" Nami administered her daily education to Luffy.
"I think I understand, more or less."
Reiner nodded inwardly. But before diving into that, he wanted to try something else. "Mister, let's continue what we were doing before."
"Ooh~ You mean that? Come on then," Broggy immediately extended his hand.
Reiner began transforming into his half-beast form. Azure flames gradually seeped from all over his body, floating on the surface before enveloping him entirely, dancing like wind.
Two short red horns emerged from his forehead, and blood-colored markings spread from the bridge of his nose towards his ears. His body emanated a lifeless aura, like withered wood and dead ashes, heavy with the scent of death.
Reiner's physical appearance didn't change drastically, but the dancing blue flames and the deathly aura gave him a profound sense of mortality.
"Woahahaha! Reiner transformed again! So cool!" Luffy was inexplicably interested in anything that could transform.
"Hey Luffy, what's going on with Reiner?"
Besides Luffy, no one else present had seen Reiner transform before. Nami and the others didn't even fully understand the different types and abilities of Devil Fruits.
"Ah, Reiner's ability lets him transform! Damn it, I want that too!" Luffy looked envious.
Mm, don't worry, you'll get yours too, Reiner thought, thinking of Luffy's future Gears.
However, even more shocked than the crew were Dorry and Broggy. Both giants stared at Reiner with alarm.
They weren't surprised by his ability itself – they had seen plenty of strange Devil Fruits before. It was because they sensed other familiar, yet unfamiliar, auras emanating from Reiner.
"Why do you..."
"It's nothing strange, Dorry."
Broggy interrupted Dorry, placing a hand on his shoulder. "We've seen similar things before. The young folk have their own paths to walk. Let's not interfere too much."
"Ah, you're right! Gahahahaha!"
"What the hell?" Reiner looked perplexed at the two giants acting strangely.
Did my Necrolord 'Overlord Aura' leak out?
Ah, whatever.
He once again placed his hand, covered in azure flames, on Broggy. This time, the process went smoothly without obstruction. Reiner guessed the initial failure was likely due to Broggy's own passive Haki presence.
Even if not actively used, does Haki still interfere slightly with abilities? Reiner speculated.
It took a full twenty minutes or so before Reiner finally retracted the azure flame. "That was exhausting~"
"What is this thing? Your ability?" Dorry asked, looking at the dancing blue flame in Reiner's hand.
Reiner had no reservations and simply explained his ability to create undead, hoping Dorry would help him out.
Dorry, being straightforward, readily agreed it was a small matter. Reiner didn't stand on ceremony and immediately covered Dorry with the azure flame.
This time, it took slightly less time – not because Dorry was weaker than Broggy, but because Reiner's fruit had undergone further development, increasing the physical stat boost it provided.
Yes, this brings us to Reiner's Devil Fruit development method.
He didn't know about Paramecia or Logia types, but his Zoan Mythical Beast type developed through continuously using its abilities and aligning himself with the corresponding form's nature.
Reiner's Devil Fruit development wasn't complicated: continuously collect stronger templates and create stronger undead.
Simple and crude, but effective!
Plenty of people in the world had defied fate with a single Devil Fruit, especially some with bizarre Paramecia types; one more wouldn't make a difference.
His advantage, however, was that Mythical Zoans are still Zoans. The deeper the fruit's development, the greater the physical enhancement it provided.
Unfortunately, apart from the huge initial boost upon eating the fruit, subsequent enhancements were smaller. That's why he maintained his habit of physical training.
Only effort will not betray you—
—Run... Marine Hero Koby!
But that wasn't what he wanted to test right now. Reiner already had ideas for these two azure flames.
Reverting to his human form, he focused his thoughts, and a void crack opened.
Two undead figures, normal human size and dressed like Spartan warriors, stepped out. But they hadn't taken two steps before—
Crack! Snap!
"Figured they'd still burst?" Reiner rubbed his chin, as if expecting this outcome.
He had wanted to compress the undead's size to gain greater agility.
However, his current power level was still insufficient to compress these two giants down to human size. Their terrifying physical stats simply caused the undead forms to burst apart.
"This also indirectly proves how absurdly strong these two templates are."
Reiner wasn't bothered. He summoned two more undead. This time, the emerging figures looked significantly different.
They were slender, nearly five meters tall, each holding a round shield and a spear, with a greatsword strapped to their waist. At a glance, they looked like Spartan warriors.
Except...
"Ahhh!!!"
A scream came from behind. Vivi covered her mouth, staring terrified at the two undead, clearly frightened.
She had only seen Reiner's Fish-Man undead before, which looked relatively friendly.
Even Nami couldn't quite adapt, grimacing and cursing irritably, "Damn it! Why do you always create such creepy things!?"
Indeed, the two Spartan warriors had no skin; just two terrifying, grinning skulls.
"I can't help it!" Reiner spread his hands helplessly. "Wasn't the idea to shed unnecessary flesh to increase agility?"
If he could have compressed them further, he wouldn't have made them like this. He noted the long red and green cloths tied around their respective waists.
"Blue Ogre and Red Ogre. Guess I'll call these two by the Misters' nicknames from now on," Reiner said, dropping his cigarette butt and grinding it out.
Finally time to test it. Let's see if you inherited Haki...
