Chapter 213 - Seeking Refuge

Her ambition had led her into this situation. She wouldn't take her own life, but she would kill Maxwell. She'd find a way, but she wouldn't let him live, after seducing her with promises and beautiful words. She got out of the bath and put on a dress, realizing that all her underwear had disappeared. Then she looked for him, but couldn't find him. He must have already left. None of the people there could understand her. But she gestured to the cook, asking for a cell phone, and saw the woman's glow of understanding, and she took the device from her pocket and handed it to her.

Camille was happy. She would send a message by cell phone to her family abroad, and they would follow the trail to find her. After sending the message, she returned the cell phone and went to her room, where one of the armed men came out as soon as she entered, and discovered that her television was on and scenes from a porn movie were playing on the screen. She turned to the man who was leaving.

 "Where are my underwear?"

"You'll only wear that kind of clothing on special occasions. But don't worry, you won't need them." The man said with a lascivious look on his face and walked away again.

Camille looked disgustedly at the TV and then rummaged through the closet. Only dresses made of strong fabric. She sat down and watched the television while masturbating.

...

Tired and sweaty, Maxwell arrived back at the mansion. He must have run at least five kilometers on the way back. That's why his father-in-law had told him to drive. This advice he would follow next time. He estimated that he must have run about twenty kilometers that day. The estate was huge, and he realized that the children would never reach the house where Camilla was. As soon as he entered the living room, he could smell the coffee and hear the children chatting excitedly. He could also hear the voices of their mother, Jenna, and his father-in-law. He decided to go upstairs and take a shower before joining them.

He showered and felt himself relax. The sleep he had missed during the night was beginning to show signs of returning. However, he wanted to spend the day with his family and would resist tiredness. He went downstairs and as soon as he reached the dining room, the table was full and everyone was chatting happily.

When he approached the table, they realized he was there. His boys, David and Donald, ran up and hugged him, then went back to their seats. Jenna, his mother and father-in-law greeted him, and as soon as he sat down, Tayme, without even looking him in the eye, left and the nanny went after her.

Maxwell felt embarrassed, but no one but his father-in-law had noticed what had happened. He breathed a sigh of relief. His daughter was stubborn, but after a few weeks of living with her, she would forget what she had seen.

He poured himself a cup of coffee and his biological mother looked at him suspiciously.

"Are you all right, my son?"

 "Yes, Mom."

"I'm glad to hear that, it'll make it easier to say goodbye."

Maxwell stared at her in surprise.

 "What are you talking about?"

"Our people, our species, have found a place in Alaska where we can live more... peacefully."

"You're not peaceful here?" Maxwell was furious.

"Yes. There's no threat to us, but... I want to get to know the place, my son. It could become a refuge for us." She said and looked meaningfully at the boys.

Maxwell understood. It was a reconnaissance trip. He had been planning to find a place like this, free from danger for his children, ever since they were born.

 "When are you going?"

Maxwell's question gave his mother a relieved smile.

"I'm leaving in a few hours. Henry did me a kindness and gave me his private jet."

"Don't keep sending news." Maxwell replied, looking at the children. Would they inherit his ability? He would find out soon enough, but it had to be subtle, so that they wouldn't notice, because children shouldn't have access to his powers. They would destroy the world.

The conversation softened and Maxwell answered his children's many questions. His father-in-law warned him between conversations that Anna would be making a phone call via the computer in the living room, which he had ordered to be put up so that everyone could see her on the large television screen there. He had called Adam and he said he would allow her to talk to the family at ten o'clock in the morning. Maxwell was excited. Finally, he would see again the woman he loved so much and who had turned his life upside down. They stayed at the table, talking until it was close to the time Adam had set. They got up and started towards the living room, but his father-in-law asked him to wait a while, and as soon as everyone had left, he turned angrily to Maxwell.

"Why is Tayme acting like that in your presence?"

 "I don't know what you're talking about."

"Don't play dumb with me, Max. That doesn't work on me, and you know it. She was happy, with a beautiful smile on her face, which disappeared as soon as she noticed him.

 "I guess I was careless... I didn't think she'd follow me..."

"Did she see you with Camille?"

 "Yes."

 "What did she really see?"

"I think she watched our performance in bed, from beginning to end." Maxwell said at once, and waited to be lectured by his father-in-law, but instead he started laughing.

"That little girl inherited her grandmother's curiosity... She'll keep that memory for the rest of her life, but she'll forgive you soon. But watch out for her. She'll grow up plotting something. You've only lost her respect, but not her love. She'll never accept you telling her off. Very soon, you'll meet the little tyrant you've sired." He said nostalgically.

"I thought you'd be annoyed. I was even thinking about what part of your sermon I was going to break in half." Maxwell said, feeling his heartbeat return to normal.

"What's the point? The damage has already been done. Her lifelong attitude towards you will be punishment enough. Now let's go to the living room, we're late." He said as he stood up, and Maxwell stood up too, and the two of them walked off together, when his father-in-law looked at him with an amused smile. "As for her punishment... I think you took care of that this morning." He said, referring to Camille, and hurried into the room.
