Chapter 49: The Fight Isn't Over
Our relief was brutally short-lived.
Just as the adrenaline from our last takedown began to fade, heavy footsteps pounded the hallway floor outside the room. The door flew open, slamming against the wall—and in stormed two more men. Bigger. Meaner. Fueled by something I couldn't place—rage, perhaps, or just the thrill of violence.
I barely had time to react. The moment the two brutes burst in, everything else blurred—instinct kicked in.
One of them—a broad-shouldered man with a crooked jaw and knuckles already bloodied—charged straight at me with a guttural roar. I could hear Vera shout behind me as she darted off toward the second attacker. No words were exchanged. No strategy. Just survival.
We split, each facing one monster.
