Chapter 7: The Fox in the Flames
The air on the second floor of the Forgotten Sanctum was thicker.
Alex felt it the moment he and Sophia stepped through the obsidian archway. The atmosphere shifted—heavier, warmer, almost alive. The torches lining the stone walls burned with violet flame, casting writhing shadows across the tiled floor.
The system pulsed.

"Did you feel that?" Alex asked, halting.
Sophia nodded, narrowing her eyes. "Someone's here. Not a dungeon spawn. Something independent."
"A demon?"
"Possibly. Or something worse."
They advanced slowly through winding corridors. The air smelled of cinnamon, spice, and distant fire. Murals decorated the walls — scenes of seduction, war, coronation. Some depicted Asmodeus himself, though the face was always shrouded in shadow or flame.
Sophia paused at one.
"This one's real," she murmured. "I remember this."
Alex looked up at the mural.
It showed a tall figure sitting on a throne, surrounded by women—and one man kneeling closest to him, eyes filled with ambition.
"That's him," she said softly. "The betrayer. He was once your most trusted general. Your only male consort. Until he took everything from you."
Alex's fists clenched.
"I'll take it back."
Before she could respond, the air trembled.
A blast of fire erupted down the corridor ahead. A scream followed—high-pitched, furious, and feminine.
They ran.
Crimson Gallery — Central Hall
They found her in the middle of a shattered chamber.
A fox-eared girl, surrounded by three corrupted Lust Spirits, each writhing with hunger. She stood her ground, her tails—nine of them—flared behind her in a fiery arc. Her violet eyes blazed with fury.
"Back. Off," she hissed, launching another wave of flame.
The spirits shrieked.
Alex didn't hesitate. He dashed forward, activating Lust Infusion and channeling energy into his blade. Sophia flanked him with shadow magic.
Together, they tore through the corrupted creatures in a flurry of blows, spellfire, and screaming steel.
When the last one fell, the girl collapsed to one knee, panting.
Alex approached cautiously. "You okay?"
She looked up, her gaze wary but not hostile.
"I'm… not your enemy."
Sophia stepped in beside Alex, arms crossed. "Then what are you doing in his dungeon?"
The girl wiped blood from her mouth and stood slowly. She wore a form-fitting battle robe torn in several places, revealing glimpses of runes etched into her skin—magical seals, complex and ancient.
"My name is Kyra," she said. "And I've been trapped here for weeks."
Kyra of the Burning Veil
They sat around a makeshift camp in the corner of the gallery. The torches dimmed as Alex offered Kyra some rations from his satchel. She ate like a starving animal, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand.
"You're Kitsune," Sophia said, watching her carefully. "And not just any. Nine-tailed. That's rare."
"I'm bonded to the Flame Court," Kyra replied. "Or I was. I came here to investigate a rift. Got pulled in by a Veil fracture. This place wasn't like this at first—it's changing. Corrupting."
Alex leaned forward. "Why would the Flame Court care about a Lust dungeon?"
Kyra looked him dead in the eye.
"Because the Flame Court owes a blood debt to Asmodeus."
The silence crackled.
Sophia sat straighter.
Alex blinked. "Wait… why?"
Kyra hesitated, then traced one of the glowing runes on her arm.
"Long ago, before the Demon Uprising, your past self spared our court during a war with the Wrath Domain. In return, the Flame Queen swore her lineage would always aid the King of Lust when called."
She looked down.
"My mother died defending the last priestess of your cult. She passed the bond to me."
The system chimed in Alex's mind.

He didn't select anything.
Not yet.
"You believe I'm Asmodeus?"
Kyra's eyes narrowed. "I don't believe. I know. Your aura… your eyes. You may not remember everything, but the blood remembers. You carry his fire."
Alex looked at his hands.
"And what if I'm not him?"
She smiled faintly.
"Then I'll help you become something greater."
Sophia watched the exchange with unreadable eyes.
Flames and Whispers
Later that night, as Sophia rested in a protective ward, Alex found Kyra sitting alone near a cracked statue of Asmodeus — the only one showing his face.
He had golden eyes.
Kyra spoke softly.
"I've had dreams since I was young. Of fire, desire, and a man wrapped in shadow. He always looked like this."
She touched the statue's cheek.
"I used to think they were visions. Maybe prophecies. Now I think… they were memories. Of a bond that transcended death."
Alex stepped closer.
"And you think that bond is with me?"
Kyra turned to him. Her voice dropped.
"I don't think. I feel it."
She stepped forward, close enough that he could feel the heat of her body.
"You don't have to claim me now. But when you do… I'll burn for you."
She kissed his cheek, her tails brushing against his legs like silk and fire.
Then she walked back into the shadows.

Alex opened the interface before sleeping.

As he stared at the stats, Lilith's voice echoed gently.
"She's strong. Loyal. A good second. But choose carefully, my king. Bonds are not toys."
"I know," Alex whispered. "I'm not choosing yet."
But even he could feel it — the hunger in his soul growing.
He was no longer just Alex.
And this dungeon wasn't just a test.
It was a summons.
