At the hospital,
Alex sat quietly outside Julian's hospital room, arms folded as she stared at the closed door. Inside, Riley and a nurse checked on him. He had just come out of surgery, pale and still, a fresh white bandage wrapped snugly around his head.
Two hospital visits in a month.
It was a new record.
The door creaked open, snapping her out of her thoughts. Riley stepped out.
Alex shot to her feet immediately, her shoulders tense.
"Is he going to be alright?" she asked, her voice hoarse.
Her brows were drawn so tightly together that they nearly touched, her forehead etched with worry.
"He's stable." Came Riley's reply. She gave the nurse some instructions, then turned to Alex with a hard look. "I'm on my break now. Let's have lunch in the cafeteria."
Alex knew that wasn't a request, it was an order.
