Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: A New School Year and New Bonds

Axel had settled into his new life in Los Angeles, visiting the Dunphys frequently but maintaining his independence in his own home. The Dunphys had quickly embraced him, particularly Claire, who insisted he visit often for meals. However, Axel had a new challenge ahead—high school.

His fabricated background made it necessary for him to attend a public school, and since he lived in the same district as the Dunphys, he would be enrolling at Piedmont High School, the same school as Alex, Luke, and Manny. Despite his immense knowledge and experiences, he had to blend in, act like a normal student, and not raise suspicion. Today marked his first day.

As Axel arrived at the school, he adjusted his backpack and took in the surroundings. Teenagers moved in groups, some chatting animatedly, others scrolling through their phones. The bell rang, signaling the beginning of the school day, and Axel made his way inside.

He entered his first class—AP Physics, where Alex was already seated, scribbling something in her notebook. She noticed him and waved him over.

"Axel, sit here. Trust me, you don't want to get stuck with any of these other slackers," she said, rolling her eyes at the group of students laughing at the back.

He smirked. "Happy to take your word for it."

The teacher, Mr. Kendrick, a middle-aged man with a sharp gaze, walked in and scanned the room. "Alright, class, before we begin, we have a new student joining us today. Axel, why don't you introduce yourself?"

Axel stood up, keeping his tone casual. "Hey everyone, I'm Axel Carter. Just moved here recently. Big fan of physics and engineering, so I'm looking forward to this class."

Mr. Kendrick nodded approvingly. "Great, another mind for the sciences. Welcome to the class."

As the lesson began, Axel settled in. He had to be careful not to show off too much—he could easily solve every problem on the board instantly, but he held back, answering just enough to be impressive yet not suspicious. Alex, however, noticed.

After class, she cornered him. "Okay, spill. How do you already know half of what we just covered? Did you study AP Physics in middle school or something?"

Axel chuckled. "Let's just say I've had a lot of time to study things on my own."

Alex narrowed her eyes. "Interesting. I'll have to keep an eye on you."

At lunch, Axel found himself at a table with Alex, Luke, and Manny. Haley wasn't around—probably skipping like usual.

Luke leaned in. "Dude, did you hear? There's a party this Friday at Dylan's place. You should come."

"Dylan?" Axel asked, pretending not to know.

Alex groaned. "Ugh, my sister's ex. I don't get why people keep going to his parties."

Luke shrugged. "Because they're awesome?"

Manny interjected. "Personally, I prefer a more refined gathering. Perhaps a poetry reading?"

Axel smirked. "I'll think about it."

Alex turned to him. "You know, I didn't expect you to be the social type. You seem more like a 'stay at home and build things' kind of guy."

"I can do both," Axel said with a grin. "Balance is key."

The afternoon passed with a mix of classes—Calculus, Literature, History, and Computer Science. In each one, Axel played his part well. He engaged just enough to fit in, made a few casual acquaintances, and ensured that he stayed on Alex's radar without drawing too much attention to his advanced intellect.

At the end of the day, as they were walking out, Alex looked over at him. "So, how was your first day?"

Axel smirked. "Not bad. I think I might just survive."

She rolled her eyes. "Well, don't get too comfortable. This school has a way of surprising you."

He chuckled, wondering if anything in this world could truly surprise him anymore. But for now, he was content. He had a place here, a role to play, and perhaps even a growing bond with Alex.
