Chapter 22 - Escaping

~kyara's pov~

Moments later, Liam jumped down beside me, landing skillfully, as if he had done this a thousand times before.

"We have to go now!" he insisted urgently, grabbing my hand as we dashed into the cover of the nearby bushes. I clenched my teeth against the agony radiating from my injured ankle, forcing myself to focus on survival.

After what felt like an eternity of running, we stumbled upon a small, rundown hut. We carefully scanned the surroundings, breathing a sigh of relief when we saw no one was in sight. Nerves still tingling, we slipped inside to ensure it was safe. It was dim and musty, but we had little time to linger.

As Liam sank to the floor, exhaustion overtaking him, I rushed to his side and my heart sank at the sight of his right shoulder, stained blood. The stark reality of the bullet that was shot at me tore at my insides, and tears blurred my vision; he had saved me.

Gathering myself amidst the fear, I searched the hut for anything that might help. With determination, I removed his shirt, torn yet functional, and pressed it against the wound, trying to staunch the flow. In that moment, I knew we had to fight together, clinging to life.

As I gently brushed my fingers against his forehead, a wave of panic washed over me. His skin felt alarmingly hot, a clear sign of fever. I attempted to rise, but my leg buckled beneath me, sending me crashing back onto the cold, hard floor. Despite the sharp pain radiating through my limb, I summoned the last remnants of my strength and slowly crawled toward the moonlight spilling through the window.

Outside, I spotted a few resilient plants, their silhouettes illuminated by the silvery glow. Though they were modest in size, I knew they could be a beacon of hope. I carefully squeezed the leaves and sap, creating a makeshift poultice that I applied to his wounds, watching as it mingled with the dark blood. The chill in the air began to creep closer, and desperation clawed at my mind—I needed to do something more.
