It had been a year since Asia came into our lives. She was love personified and always happy in our company.
The morning in Sainan had that golden light filtering softly through the kitchen curtains, as if the sun itself was curiously peeking in, wanting to participate in that simple and cozy moment between Asia, Rito, and Mikan.
"Good morning, everyone!" Asia said, smiling as she arranged the plates on the table, her blonde hair tied in a slightly messy ponytail, with small strands escaping here and there.
"Good morning, Asia-nee!" Mikan responded cheerfully, helping to put the juice glasses in place. "Wow, you really woke up early to do all this, huh?"
"Oh, it was nothing special," Asia replied with a soft laugh, blushing slightly. "I like preparing tasty things so we can start the day well!"
At that moment, Rito stumbled into the kitchen, a bit dizzy, his dark hair even messier than normal, looking like a cat that had just fought with a hair dryer.
"Good morning..." he mumbled, rubbing his eyes while yawning deeply.
"Well, look who decided to wake up!" Mikan teased, laughing. "Good morning, Mr. Sleepyhead!"
"Mikan, give me a break," he grumbled, but couldn't hide a smile when his eyes landed on the table. "Wow, this looks great, Asia. Thank you!"
Asia blushed even more and averted her eyes shyly, fiddling with the edge of her apron, a little awkward.
"Oh, no need to thank me, Rito-san. I hope you like it!"
"I'll definitely like it," he replied with an open smile, sitting at the table with hunger worthy of an entire battalion.
During the meal, the three chatted about silly and trivial things, light laughter spreading throughout the room, filling every corner of the kitchen with familiar warmth.
"You two are really silly," Mikan joked, shaking her head, but her eyes shone with that genuine happiness that only emerges in moments like this.
Asia and Rito exchanged quick glances, looking away soon after, chuckling softly.
And on that simple morning, under the affectionate gaze of the sun, there was no doubt: that small improvised family had found something none of them ever expected to have so soon – a home, as welcoming as a tight hug after a difficult day.
**
[CREEK!]
The bathroom door moaned softly as it opened. Rito sighed, tired after another exhausting day. Asia had changed his routine, and he was still getting used to sharing his house with the girl who was now practically an adopted sister.
"Ahhh... what a day, huh?" he muttered to himself, taking off his clothes and folding them carefully.
[SHHHH!]
Steam filled the small bathroom as hot water filled the bathtub. Rito plunged into the bath, letting the warm water relax his tense muscles.
"Finally a moment of peace..." he sighed, closing his eyes and sinking a little deeper into the water.
[VRUUUUMMMM...]
A strange buzzing echoed above him. Rito opened his eyes, frowning.
"What the heck is that now?" he whispered, already prepared for another bizarre event.
[FLAAAASH!]
A sudden flash illuminated the bathroom, temporarily blinding him. The air seemed to vibrate for a moment.
"What's that!?" Rito exclaimed, rising slightly in the bathtub.
Before he could understand what was happening, something – or rather, someone – materialized directly above him.
[SPLASH!]
Water went everywhere as a pink-haired girl fell directly into his bathtub.
"Aaaah!" Rito screamed, slipping on the wet surface.
In the confusion of the moment, his hands instinctively searched for support, grabbing what they found first. Unfortunately for Rito, what his hands found were the soft breasts of the mysterious girl.
"Huh?!" Rito froze, realizing what he was holding. His eyes widened in panic. "S-s-sorry!"
But instead of screaming or getting angry, the pink-haired girl blinked a few times, curious, looking at his hands on her breasts and then at Rito's red face.
"Hello!" she said, excited and carefree, as if the situation were perfectly normal. "I'm Lala!"
Rito choked, realizing he hadn't yet let go of her breasts. He quickly removed his hands, hitting his back on the edge of the bathtub in a desperate attempt to move away.
"W-who are you?! How did you appear here? And for God's sake, why are you naked?!"
Lala laughed, a crystalline and light sound.
"Oh, sorry! I didn't mean to scare you. I was running away from some annoying guys and ended up here." She looked at herself, apparently only now noticing her nudity. "My clothes evaporated during teleportation. Small calculation error. It happens."
"Get out of my bathtub!" Rito protested, his face redder than a bell pepper.
"But it's warm in here," she replied, making herself more comfortable in the water, making more contact with Rito's body.
[KNOCK KNOCK!]
A light knock on the door made his heart nearly jump out of his mouth.
"Rito-kun?" called Asia's sweet voice from the other side of the door. "Is everything okay in there? I heard you scream..."
Rito looked horrified at Lala, who smiled calmly as if there were no problem at all.
"Ah! Everything's great, Asia!" he replied, trying not to sound panicked. "I just... just slipped a little! Nothing serious!"
"Hmm... If you say so..." she replied uncertainly. "If you need anything, just call, okay?"
"Sure!" he said, hearing her footsteps moving away down the corridor.
Rito turned to Lala, who was playing with the water, apparently fascinated by the soap bubbles.
"Listen here, Lala, whoever you are, you need to get out of here now. Asia and my sister can't see you like this, or I'm done for. Understand?"
Lala smiled, looking directly into his eyes.
"You're funny! What's your name?"
"Rito... Yuki Rito," he replied automatically, before shaking his head. "Wait, that doesn't matter! You need to leave!"
"Rito..." she repeated, as if savoring the name. "Nice to meet you, Rito!" And then, to his horror, she moved even closer, their bodies touching in the hot water. "I think you just saved me!"
"My life is turning into a circus!" thought Rito, while Lala smiled innocently. Outside, a spaceship was making its silent approach, preparing to further complicate the already chaotic life of the boy.
After all, normality was already an impossible luxury since Rito had become the Presence.
The worst, or perhaps the best, was yet to come.
**
[SPLASH!]
Lala moved in the bathtub, sending small waves that overflowed onto the cold bathroom floor. Rito was trapped — not just physically in that absurd situation, but also by the hypnotizing gaze of that strange pink-haired girl.
"Look at you, you don't even know me and you're already all red," she laughed, bringing her face closer to his. "That's so cute!"
"C-cute my foot!" Rito stuttered, trying to move away more, but he was literally cornered against the wall. "Can you please get off me?!"
[BZZZT! BZZZT!]
A sharp buzz cut through the air, and suddenly a small flying object entered through the bathroom window. It looked like a toy, with wings and a cartoonish face.
"Lala-sama!" exclaimed the little robot, floating over the bathtub. "I finally found you! The pursuers are approaching Earth's atmosphere!"
"Oh, hi Peke!" Lala waved cheerfully, as if she were at a picnic and not naked in a stranger's bathtub. "This is Rito. He saved me!"
Rito looked at the floating little robot, then at Lala, and finally at his own hands that were still cold with sweat. His head was about to explode.
"What the hell is going on here?! Who are you really? And what's this story about pursuers?" he fired the questions, his voice rising several octaves above normal.
[VRUUUUM! BOOOM!]
A deafening roar shook the entire house. Something big had just landed outside.
"Oops, they're here!" Lala smiled, looking more excited than concerned. "Peke, clothing form, please!"
"Yes, Lala-sama!"
[PIIIIN! WHOOSH!]
In the blink of an eye, the small robot transformed, wrapping Lala's body in a strange outfit — something like a white dress with bizarre details that would certainly not go unnoticed on a normal street in Sainan.
"All ready!" she jumped out of the bathtub, completely dry, as if the water simply slid off the material of the outfit. "Now I'm presentable!"
"Presentable isn't exactly the word I'd use..." muttered Rito, taking the opportunity to wrap himself in a towel. "Who are these guys chasing you? Criminals? Police?"
Lala made a dismissive gesture with her hand.
"Oh, they're just some of my father's henchmen. He wants me to marry some boring, presumptuous guys. So I ran away!"
"Your father sends henchmen after you?" Rito asked incredulously. "What kind of father does that?"
[CRASH! BANG!]
The sound of breaking glass came from the living room.
"A father who is king of the entire planet Deviluke and a good part of the Milky Way," she replied, as if she were talking about the weather.
Rito froze, the towel slipping slightly from his trembling hands.
"You are... an alien?"
"Well, of course!" she laughed, pointing to her thin tail that ended in a diamond tip, which Rito, somehow, hadn't noticed before. "I thought you had noticed."
[THUMP! THUMP! THUMP!]
Heavy footsteps echoed through the house, approaching the bathroom.
"Princess Lala Satalin Deviluke!" a deep, authoritative voice called from the other side of the door. "We know you're in there! Come out immediately or we'll break down this door!"
"See what I mean? So annoying..." sighed Lala, rolling her eyes.
Rito ran his hands through his wet hair, desperate.
"Princess?! You're an alien princess?! And now there are space bodyguards invading my house?!"
Lala turned to him with a smile that would illuminate the entire galaxy.
"Exactly! And you know what?" she winked, twirling around herself. "I think you just gave me an incredible idea!"
"I-idea?" Rito stammered, feeling a chill run down his spine. Something told him that nothing good would come from that mischievous expression on the girl's face.
[BAM! BAM! BAM!]
The door shook with the violent knocks.
"Five seconds to come out, princess!" threatened the voice from outside.
Lala grabbed Rito's hands, her green eyes shining like wild emeralds.
"Rito, marry me!"
"WHAT?!" he almost fell backwards, slipping on the wet floor. "We just met! And you're not even human! And we're in the BATHROOM!"
"Details, details..." she made a careless gesture. "If you're my fiancé, they can't take me back! It's perfect!"
[CRACK!]
The door began to give way.
Rito looked at Lala, at the door about to be knocked down, and at the small robot that was now her dress. His mind was working frantically. Marry an alien princess he had met less than five minutes ago, naked, in his bathtub? This was total madness!
But before he could refuse that insane proposal, the Presence within him pulsed. It was just a slight ripple in the fabric of reality, but Rito felt it clearly. His power that he left dormant for emergencies. He had turned almost everything down, only invulnerability activated, after all, it was boring to know everything. Living knowing how everything will occur was monotonous, at best. — It was almost like a cosmic smile, a subtle nod that, perhaps, this seemingly accidental encounter wasn't so accidental after all.
"Could this be part of the plan? Could she and the so-called Red Dragon?" he thought, remembering the prophecy about his future.
"Come on, Rito!" insisted Lala, squeezing his hands. "What do you say? I promise to be a fun bride!"
[CRRRRAAAACK!]
The door finally gave way, revealing two tall and intimidating figures — men in black suits with clearly non-human features: completely black eyes, pointed ears, and grayish skin.
"Princess Lala!" exclaimed the tallest of them, looking shocked at the scene: the princess holding hands with a half-naked Earthling in a flooded bathroom.
The second alien drew something that looked like a ray gun.
"Step away from the human immediately!"
Lala looked at Rito, a silent plea in her green eyes. He swallowed hard, his heart beating like a runaway drum. The Presence within him pulsed again, stronger this time.
"S-she..." Rito began, his voice faltering initially. Then, he took a deep breath and tried again, surprising even himself. "She is my fiancée! I won't let you take her!"
A shocked silence filled the bathroom. Lala gasped, her eyes widening even more, and then a radiant smile like a thousand suns illuminated her face. The two aliens took a step back, confused.
"Fiancée?" questioned the shorter one, pointing the gun back to the holster. "Is this true, princess?"
"Yes!" Lala practically jumped for joy, grabbing Rito's arm and pressing it against her body. "I found my fiancé on Earth! See? I don't need to marry those boring guys that daddy chose!"
The two aliens exchanged worried looks.
"King Gid will not be at all pleased with this news," muttered the taller one.
"Not my problem!" sang Lala, quickly kissing Rito's cheek, making him blush to the roots of his hair. "You can go now and tell him!"
[BZZZT!]
The communicators on the aliens' wrists beeped simultaneously.
"Immediate withdrawal," announced the shorter one after checking the message. "But this isn't over. We'll be back with direct instructions from the King."
With a final evaluating look at Rito, the two turned around and left the destroyed bathroom, leaving a trail of wet floor and a broken door.
[VRUUUUM! WHOOOSH!]
Seconds later, the roar of engines indicated that the ship was taking off.
Rito let out a long, trembling sigh, letting himself slide to the floor.
"What the hell just happened?" he muttered, still trying to process the last five minutes of his life.
Lala knelt beside him, smiling like a child on Christmas morning.
"You were amazing, Rito! Thank you for defending me!"
"I didn't defend you," he corrected, running his hand over his face. "I just... I just didn't want them to destroy anything else in my house."
Lala laughed, a sound that made the air vibrate like delicate crystals.
"You're going to be a great fiancé!"
"I'm not your real fiancé!" Rito protested. "It was just to help you get out of this mess!"
Lala tilted her head, confused.
"But you said you were..."
"I lied!" Rito explained, exasperated. "To help you!"
Lala's smile hesitated for a second, but soon returned, even more radiant.
"That means you care about me!" she concluded cheerfully, interpreting everything in the way that suited her.
[KNOCK KNOCK]
A soft knock on the frame of the broken door made them both turn.
"Rito-kun?" Asia was standing there, gaping at the scene: the destroyed bathroom, water everywhere, and Rito still in a towel next to a strange pink-haired girl in a bizarre dress. "W-what happened here?"
Rito opened his mouth, closed it, opened it again, but no sound came out.
Lala jumped up and extended her hand animatedly to Asia.
"Hi! I'm Lala Satalin Deviluke, princess of planet Deviluke and Rito's fiancée! You must be Asia! Rito told me about you!"
"Fiancée?!" exclaimed Asia, her green eyes almost popping out of their sockets.
"I didn't tell her about you! We just met!" Rito protested, then turned to Asia. "She's not my fiancée!"
"But you just said you were!" insisted Lala, pouting.
Asia looked from one to the other, completely lost.
"Rito-kun... you... got married?"
"NO!" he shouted, feeling that he was losing control of the situation with each second. "I just... it's complicated!"
It was at that exact moment that Mikan appeared behind Asia, attracted by the commotion.
"What's all this noise?" she asked, then her eyes registered the state of the bathroom and those present. "Ah, Rito, what did you do this time?"
Rito let his head fall into his hands, defeated. It was official: his normal life was completely over.
And this was just the beginning.
