Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Echoes of the Past

The world of Nexara had long since left behind the limits of natural evolution. Genetic modification was no longer an experiment—it was a way of life. HelixCorp, the undisputed ruler of genetic technology, had reshaped society through its revolutionary Gene Codex system. For a price, citizens could unlock abilities their ancestors only dreamed of—enhanced reflexes, photographic memory, even resistance to disease. But beneath this polished facade of progress, something far more sinister was hidden.

Ethan Vale never cared much for HelixCorp or their genetic promises. He was content living in the shadows of Nexara's bustling neon-lit districts, where towering skyscrapers kissed the sky and holographic advertisements painted the night. He kept his head down, worked his shifts at a tech repair shop, and avoided drawing attention. But everything changed on the night of his twenty-first birthday.

It started as a headache—sharp and sudden, like a crack of lightning splitting his skull. Ethan staggered back from his workbench, nearly knocking over a half-disassembled holo-pad. He gritted his teeth, blinking as his vision blurred. And then...

The visions came.

Flashes of a life that wasn't his.

A sterile lab, cold and metallic, illuminated by pulsing blue lights. Rows of data streams scrolling faster than the human eye could follow. And in the center of it all—a man, his face partially obscured by a visor, working frantically at a console.

Ethan gasped as the vision intensified. He could feel the man's pulse racing. The weight of urgency pressed down on him. Code sequences. Formulas. Encryption layers. They flooded his mind like a torrent, foreign yet familiar.

And then came the voice.

"Welcome back, Dr. Crowe."

Ethan stumbled back, his heart pounding in his ears. The name echoed in his mind—Dr. Daniel Crowe—a name he had never heard before, yet it stirred something deep within his bones. His hands trembled as the vision faded, leaving behind a searing pain that lingered in the back of his skull.

"Ethan?"

The concerned voice of Lena Carter snapped him back to reality. She stood by the door of the shop, her auburn hair pulled into a messy bun, eyes narrowed with worry. Lena had always been the one to notice when something was off.

"Are you okay?" she asked, stepping closer.

Ethan forced a smile, wiping the sweat from his brow. "Yeah... just a bad headache."

But he knew it was more than that.

The visions didn't stop. They grew stronger, more vivid. Each night, Ethan was transported deeper into the memories of Dr. Crowe—an enigmatic scientist who had once been at the heart of HelixCorp's greatest secret. Crowe had unlocked something beyond genetic modification—Genetic Echoes, a technology capable of embedding ancestral knowledge and abilities directly into living DNA.

But HelixCorp didn't want the world to know. Crowe had gone into hiding, his research buried under layers of encrypted data. And now, somehow, that knowledge was resurfacing—inside Ethan.

With each passing day, the memories became clearer. Ethan could feel Crowe's instincts merging with his own. He knew things he had never learned. He could predict movement, crack security protocols, and sense danger before it happened. But along with those abilities came something far more dangerous.

HelixCorp was watching.

It was late when Ethan received the message. A simple notification on his holo-pad. Encrypted. Anonymous.

"You're not safe. They know."

Ethan's blood turned cold. He scanned the message again, his fingers tightening around the device.

"Find the Codex. Decode the truth."

His heart pounded as a second message followed.

"Lena knows where to start."

Ethan's eyes snapped to the door where Lena had stood just hours ago.

"Lena..." he murmured.

The answers were closer than he thought. But so were the dangers.

Ethan's journey was just beginning.

And this time, the future of Nexara hung in the balance.
