Chapter 35 - Ch 35 : Battle Against Rogue Infected

Renji and his teammates moved cautiously through the remains of their hideout, their senses on high alert. The air was thick with the smell of burnt wood and the acrid tang of charred metal. It felt like everything they had built, everything they had fought for, had been ripped from their hands in a matter of moments. Now, with the threat of their unknown assailants still looming, they couldn't afford to let their guard down for even a second.

The landscape around them was a mixture of destruction and disarray. What had once been a simple hideout surrounded by trees and underbrush was now a barren, scarred terrain, littered with smoldering wreckage. The sound of distant crashing trees and the low rumble of the wind made the atmosphere feel even more oppressive, a constant reminder of how fragile their lives had become.

Mika, always attuned to the vibrations around her, had already begun scanning the ground, her kinetic blasts barely registering as a hum under her control. She moved slowly, scanning for any signs of movement—anything that would give them an indication of where their attackers had gone.

"I don't feel anyone nearby," she said, her voice strained. "But that doesn't mean they aren't watching."

Renji nodded, his expression grim. He had grown accustomed to this feeling—the constant weight of danger hanging over them, the sense that someone, or something, was always just out of sight, waiting for the right moment to strike.

Takeshi, his towering frame still imposing despite the fatigue from their previous encounters, swept his gaze across the landscape, his powerful body tensed and ready for a fight. He said nothing but his eyes spoke volumes—he was prepared for whatever came next.

Yumi, silent as ever, had her shadowy tendrils extending from her body, sensing the world around her. Her eyes, however, betrayed a sense of unease, the flickering shadows beneath her feet shifting restlessly as though responding to something she couldn't quite pinpoint.

Kaito, the electric energy crackling faintly at his fists, glanced around nervously. "Something's off," he muttered. "It's too quiet."

"We can't waste any more time," Renji said, his voice low, but filled with resolve. "We know whoever did this is nearby, and they won't get away with it. Let's head out. Stick together."

The group moved out, careful not to stray too far from one another. As they navigated through the dense forest, the sense of unease only deepened. The air felt heavy, the underbrush thick with the remnants of their once-secure hideout, making it difficult to track any potential movement.

But as they ventured deeper, something caught their attention. The sound of distant shouting and the unmistakable growls of something monstrous.

Renji's instincts kicked in. "This way," he ordered, taking the lead.

The team followed him swiftly, their movements swift but quiet, until they came to a clearing where the chaos unfolded before them. A massive rhinoceros monster, its hide thick and armored with jagged, bony plates, was locked in a brutal struggle with a group of infected. The mutated humans were unlike any Renji had encountered before. Their limbs were grotesquely deformed, some with unnatural growths sprouting from their backs, while others had mutated facial features, their eyes wild with frenzy. They were savages, each one fighting as if their very survival depended on taking down the rhinoceros-like beast in front of them.

The rhinoceros monster was charging relentlessly, its horn cutting through the air with deadly force, but the infected seemed to be on another level of madness. They were fast, their movements unpredictable as they darted in and out of the monster's reach, trying to exploit the beast's openings.

Renji's eyes widened as he watched the chaos unfold before him. His team had seen monsters before, but this one—this one was different. The beast was colossal, at least three meters tall, with a body that looked like it could withstand the most brutal of blows. But the infected were relentless. They moved with a ferocity Renji hadn't seen before, their minds clearly clouded by their mutations.

"Should we help them?" Takeshi asked, his muscles tensing in preparation for a fight. He was always ready for action, and this was no exception. But there was something unnerving about the way these infected were fighting—there was no strategy, no discipline. Just pure, unbridled chaos.

Renji watched the scene unfold, his gaze flicking between the rhinoceros monster and the savage infected. He was tempted to intervene, but something didn't sit right with him. The infected didn't look like typical dungeon-born creatures—they were different. They were more... human. Which meant they were possibly another group of rogue infected, just like the ones that had attacked their hideout.

"We can't afford to waste time," Renji finally said. "Let's stay hidden for now. We need to know what they're up to."

Yumi's shadowy tendrils swayed with an unsettling calm as she took a step back, her eyes never leaving the group of infected. "They're not normal," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "These aren't just monsters. They're... they're something else."

Mika, her kinetic energy still pulsating through her veins, watched the battle carefully. "We need to get a closer look," she said. "Maybe we can pick them off one by one."

Renji considered this, but he quickly shot the idea down. "No. We're not taking unnecessary risks right now. We need to stay hidden. Watch, observe, and learn."

For a long moment, the group stood in the shadows, watching the battle unfold.

The infected, despite their savage and disorganized fighting style, were beginning to overwhelm the rhinoceros monster. A few had climbed onto its back, their claws digging into its thick hide as they drove their grotesque blades into the beast. The monster let out an ear-splitting roar, thrashing in an attempt to throw them off. But the infected were tenacious—almost too much so. One of them sank its teeth into the creature's neck, and the beast stumbled, struggling to maintain its balance.

Renji's heart raced as he saw the beast weaken. It was clear that the infected had an advantage, though not in strength or size. It was their sheer relentlessness, their willingness to sacrifice everything for the kill, that was giving them the edge.

"This is insane," Kaito muttered under his breath, his fists crackling with electricity. "These guys are on a whole other level. We can't take them lightly."

Renji's gaze sharpened. The infected weren't just mindless beasts—they were driven by something, something that gave them the tenacity to take down a monster far larger than themselves. It made Renji uneasy.

Suddenly, one of the infected, a tall, hulking figure, seemed to notice their presence in the shadows. Its head snapped in their direction, its eyes wild with a predatory gleam. The others followed suit, and before Renji could react, the group of infected began moving toward them with alarming speed.

"We've been spotted!" Renji barked, his eyes wide. "Prepare yourselves!"

Without another word, the group sprang into action, preparing to face whatever these new infected had to throw at them.

But just as they were about to engage, the rhinoceros monster, in a final, desperate move, let out a powerful roar that sent a shockwave through the area. The infected hesitated for a moment, momentarily stunned by the beast's defiant stand.

Renji's instincts screamed at him to take advantage of the opening.

"Now!" he shouted, and the battle was on.
