Chapter 54 - Lightwalkers

It was thick with treetops, so the road beyond valley lay broad and bright.

"There was grass growing wild between the cracked stones of what had once been a royal walkway — as if the world had forgotten about it and the world had forgotten about it, but it hadn't." The wild grass, spangled silver, glittered at every step Serena took, as though it knew her. Like it remembered.

The pack quietly, gradually followed her. Belief came in a flood, what was once just a lilt of the head held high turned into a march. Others were carrying torches, but many no longer needed them. Serena was the one who lit the way.

Lucian stepped in beside her once more. His hand brushed against hers now and then — not on purpose, but not by accident, either. He didn't even flinch when she gazed at him.

But the encounter with the silver-armored commander had changed it all. They had discovered something new, too, a proof that not even the enemy had completely forgotten: there were still fighting ahead.
