Chapter 14 - Chapter 40-41-42

Chapter 40: The Rise to Command

It was a sunny day at Damn Neck Naval Base, Virginia. Aaron was in his office reviewing reports on his team's latest operations. Despite the fatigue accumulated from years of high-intensity missions, he still carried the same determination and discipline that had defined him since the beginning of his career.

He was focused when Bravo 2 knocked on the door. "Red, there's a command meeting now. They said your presence is essential."

Aaron looked up in surprise. "Out of nowhere?"

Bravo 2 shrugged, but the barely contained smile on his face betrayed that something special was coming.

When he reached the conference room, Aaron found other DEVGRU operators, as well as senior officers and instructors he had known for years. The admiral in charge of the unit stood in the center, his gaze serious but with a positive energy.

"Lieutenant Rollins," the admiral began, his firm voice commanding immediate respect.

"Sir!" Aaron responded, standing at attention.

"Relax, son. We're not here to discipline anyone today," the admiral said with a slight smile, breaking the ice. The entire room chuckled softly.

The admiral continued, "Aaron Rollins, you have served with distinction for years, from SEAL Team 3 to your transfer to DEVGRU. You have demonstrated not only exceptional courage and tactical skills, but also leadership and character that inspire your men. It is with great pleasure that I announce your promotion to the rank of lieutenant commander."

The room erupted in applause. Aaron was momentarily speechless, but quickly composed himself and saluted. "It is an honor, sir. I am here to serve and to lead."

The admiral nodded and asked Aaron to step up to the makeshift stage. He removed the lieutenant insignia from Aaron's uniform and replaced it with the lieutenant commander insignia.

After the ceremony, Aaron was surrounded by his staff and other members of the command. Bravo 3 gave him a friendly slap on the back. "Well, Red, now you have even more responsibility. As if you didn't have enough already!"

Aaron laughed. "Believe me, I'm used to it. But I'm not going to lie, it feels good to be recognized."

Bravo 5 commented, "You deserve it, boss. You've always led with your head and your heart."

As the conversation flowed, Aaron began to reflect on the path that had brought him to this point. He remembered the idealistic young man who had joined the SEALs full of energy but not knowing what the future held. He remembered his first missions, the nights of training and the inevitable losses. Each moment had shaped him into the leader he was now.

That night, Aaron went to his parents' house to share the news. Elizabeth opened the door and immediately noticed the smile on her son's face. "What happened, Aaron? You seem… different."

"I was promoted to lieutenant commander today," he replied proudly.

Joseph, who had been reading on the couch, stood up quickly. "Lieutenant Commander? That's awesome, son! I knew this day would come."

Elizabeth hugged him tightly. "We're so proud of you, Aaron. We always knew you were destined for great things."

Cathy arrived shortly after, still in uniform, and ran to hug her brother. "Aaron, that's awesome! You deserve it so much."

"Thanks, Cat. Now, what do you like to call me? 'The Chief of the SEALs'?" he joked, drawing a laugh.

Later that night, Aaron and his team went to the local SEAL bar in Virginia Beach. It was the perfect place to unwind and celebrate among those who understood the intensity of life on the front lines.

Bravo 2 raised a beer. "To one of the best leaders we've ever had, and now a lieutenant commander! To Red!"

Everyone raised their glasses and toasted enthusiastically. Aaron laughed, but then quickly raised his own beer.

"I just want to say one thing," he began, and the chatter around him slowed. "This promotion isn't just about me. It's about all of us, about the work we do together. You're the reason I can lead, who I fight for every day. So thank you. To all of you."

The bar erupted in applause and whistles.

In the middle of the party, Aaron's cell phone vibrated. It was a message from the DEVGRU commander. "President Bush asked me to congratulate you personally. He mentioned that he still expects you to visit the White House."

Aaron showed the message to Bravo 2, who gaped at him. "You really impressed the most powerful man in the world, huh?"

Aaron shrugged, but there was a glint of pride in his eyes. "Just doing my job."

As the party continued, Aaron sat for a moment, watching his men laugh and joke. He knew the promotion was a milestone, but it also brought new responsibilities.

Deep down, he knew that the world still of the dangerous era, that difficult missions lay ahead. But at that moment, he allowed himself to enjoy the victory, surrounded by the people he respected and considered family.

Chapter 41: A Presidential Invitation

It was a quiet morning in the Rollins household, with sunlight streaming through the kitchen windows. Elizabeth was making pancakes while Joseph read the paper in his favorite chair. Cathy and Aaron sat at the table, chatting over coffee.

"So, Aaron, what are you doing on your break?" Cathy asked, buttering a slice of toast.

"Work out, get some rest, and hang out with you guys, of course," he replied, taking a sip of coffee.

Cathy laughed. "That sounds more like a training plan than a break."

"Old habits," he said, smirking.

Elizabeth set a plate of pancakes on the table. "You two need some real food to relax. No military rations around here."

"Thanks, Mom," Aaron said, taking a pancake.

Cathy, ever curious, looked at her brother. "Aaron, have you met the President yet?"

Joseph put down the newspaper, now interested in the conversation. "Good question, Cathy. Have you ever had any direct contact with him?"

Aaron finished chewing before answering. "Actually, yes."

Cathy's eyes widened. "Really? When was that?"

Aaron smiled, remembering the moment. "It was during a mission in Kandahar. He came to visit the troops, and my team was tasked with doing his PSD. After the visit, we took a picture together."

Cathy looked incredulous. "And you never told us that?!"

"It's not something I go around telling people about," Aaron said, shrugging. "But it was an interesting experience. He even invited me to visit the White House if I was in Washington."

Cathy was even more intrigued. "Do you have the picture?"

Aaron got up and went to his room, returning with a folder. He opened it and took out a photograph carefully stored in protective plastic. In the picture, Aaron and his team stood in formation next to President Bush, all in their tactical gear.

Cathy picked up the photo carefully, examining every detail. "You look so serious here, but at the same time you look proud."

"This is a moment that deserves respect," Aaron explained. "The President is the Commander-in-Chief, after all."

Joseph leaned closer to look at the photo. "That's something to be proud of, Aaron. Not everyone gets to experience something like that."

Elizabeth, who had just entered the room, looked at the photo and smiled. "You always surprise us, son. First the promotion, now this. What else are you hiding?"

Aaron laughed. "That's all, Mom. I promise."

As they passed the photo around, Cathy couldn't contain her curiosity. "What did he say to you? Did he seem… human? I mean, sometimes it's hard to imagine such a powerful figure as a normal person."

Aaron smiled. "He's a very warm person. He asked about conditions in the field, about operations, and even asked for advice on some geopolitical issues. He seemed genuinely interested in hearing what we had to say."

Cathy raised an eyebrow. "You gave advice to the President of the United States?"

Aaron shrugged. "Let's just say I shared some observations. He seemed genuinely interested."

Joseph put his hand on his son's shoulder. "That's a great honor, Aaron. It shows that they recognize your knowledge and experience."

"I agree," Elizabeth said. "You've worked so hard to get where you are, and now even the President recognizes that."

Cathy, still holding the photo, looked at her brother with a mischievous smile. "So, when are we going to the White House? Because I'm going with you."

Aaron laughed. "I don't think it's that simple, Cat. But if I do go, I'll let you know."

Joseph joined in the joke. "I'd like to go too. I've never been to Washington, and it would be nice to see the White House."

"I want to, too," Elizabeth said, smiling. "After all, I'm the mother of a lieutenant commander. I guess I have the right."

Aaron shook his head, laughing. "If I get called, I'll take you. I promise."

After breakfast, Aaron went out into the backyard with Joseph. Father and son sat on wooden chairs, looking out at the blue sky and trees around them.

"Are you proud of where you've come, Aaron?" Joseph asked, looking out at the horizon.

Aaron took a moment before answering. "I am. But I also know there's still a lot to do. I don't do this for the recognition or the promotions. I do it because it's the right thing to do."

Joseph smiled. "That's what I've always admired about you, son. Your humility and your sense of duty."

"I learned that from you, Dad."

They sat in silence for a while, enjoying the quiet of the moment.

Later, in the living room, Cathy was on the phone with friends, while Elizabeth and Aaron discussed his next steps.

"Do you think you'll be gone for long again?" Elizabeth asked, worried.

"Maybe," Aaron said honestly. "But I'll always come back."

Elizabeth nodded, but her eyes showed concern. "Just be careful, Aaron. We know how strong you are, but we are still your family."

Aaron smiled and kissed her on the forehead. "Always, Mom. Always."

That night, as everyone gathered for dinner, Joseph raised his glass. "Here's to our family. And to Aaron, for all he's accomplished and for being the man he is."

Aaron felt a little embarrassed, but he raised his glass too. "And to you, for always being there for me."

Cathy joked, "And to me, for being the most amazing sister ever."

Everyone laughed, and the night was filled with stories, laughter, and the comfort of being with those who mattered most.

Chapter 42: A Visit to Washington

It was a sunny morning in Virginia Beach, and Aaron was sitting in his backyard, gazing up at the blue sky. His parents and Cathy were inside, chatting excitedly about the upcoming community event. Aaron, however, was lost in thought. The idea of visiting Washington, something he had put off for so long, seemed increasingly appealing.

He picked up the phone and walked into the living room. "Mom, Dad, Cathy, I want to talk to you."

Elizabeth, Joseph, and Cathy stopped what they were doing and looked at him. "What's up, son?" Elizabeth asked.

Aaron scratched the back of his neck. "I'm thinking about visiting Washington. I thought it would be a good opportunity to make good on that promise the President made."

Cathy immediately jumped up from the couch. "I knew this day would come! When are we going?"

Aaron laughed. "Calm down, Cat. First, I need to get in touch with the right people. But if all goes well, I want you to come with me."

Joseph smiled proudly. "I've always wanted to visit Washington. And now, with an occasion like this, it seems like the perfect time."

Elizabeth, her eyes shining, agreed. "It's going to be wonderful. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for all of us."

Aaron made a few calls to his contacts and informed them that he would be in Washington the following week. To his surprise, one of the President's cabinet secretaries responded personally and confirmed that the invitation was still open.

They arranged an official visit to the White House. That evening, the Rollins family was gathered together, planning the trip.

Cathy, as always, was excited. "I need to buy new clothes! I want to look impeccable for the occasion."

"Don't forget that this is a formal visit, Cathy," Elizabeth said, smiling.

Aaron laughed. "And do you think they'll notice your outfit? I'm sure they'll be more interested in national security matters."

"That doesn't mean I can't impress," Cathy replied jokingly.

Joseph shook his head. "Your brother is right. Let's keep things simple and respectful."

The trip to Washington was uneventful. The family arrived in the capital and checked into a hotel near the National Mall. In the morning, they decided to explore a bit before their scheduled visit to the White House.

They walked by the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, and even stopped by the National Museum of American History. Cathy was in awe. "It's so beautiful here. I never thought the city would be so grand."

Aaron, always alert, took in the surroundings. Despite being off duty, his instinct as an operator never let him completely relax.

When they finally arrived at the White House, they were greeted by a presidential aide. He gave them a private tour, explaining the history and details of each room they visited.

"It's surreal to be here," Elizabeth commented, looking around the East Room.

"To think that so many important decisions were made within these walls," Joseph added.

Cathy, impressed, discreetly snapped photos with her camera. "I'll treasure every moment."

As they stood in the Oval Office, the aide paused and smiled. "The President would like to meet you in person. He is available now, if you would like."

Elizabeth's eyes widened. "Really?"

Aaron remained composed, but he was surprised. "Of course. It would be an honor."

They were led into a conference room where President George W. Bush was waiting. He stood and shook hands with each of them, starting with Aaron.

"Lieutenant Commander Rollins, it's a pleasure to see you again," Bush said with a genuine smile.

"It's my pleasure, sir," Aaron replied, firmly but humbly.

Bush greeted Aaron and Cathy's parents with the same warmth. "You have an extraordinary son. He is an example of dedication and patriotism."

Elizabeth beamed with pride. "We know that, sir. But hearing this from you means a lot to us."

Cathy said excitedly, "He doesn't talk much about the things he does, so it's nice to hear it from someone who really knows."

The President laughed. "That's how the best are. They talk less and do more."

During the meeting, Bush made a point of speaking directly to Aaron. "Your knowledge and insights impressed me on that visit. I'm sure you continue to be one of the best operators in the Navy."

Aaron responded modestly. "I appreciate it, sir, but I'm just part of an incredible team. Every success is the result of a joint effort."

Bush nodded. "That's the mindset of a true leader."

He also spoke with Aaron's parents, asking about their son's childhood. Joseph shared stories of how Aaron was always determined and focused, even as a child.

Before they said goodbye, Bush made a point of taking an official photo with the family. "This visit is one to remember. And, Lieutenant Commander, the White House will always have an open door for you and your family."

As they left the White House, Cathy beamed. "That was incredible! I'll never forget that day."

Elizabeth agreed. "That was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I'm so proud of you, Aaron."

Joseph put his hand on his son's shoulder. "You're a role model not only for the country, but for our family."

Aaron, while grateful for the words, remained humble. "This is all a result of hard work and the incredible people around me. And you guys are the foundation of it all."

Later that day, the family went out to dinner at a restaurant near the Capitol. They talked about the day's events and made plans for the future. Aaron, once again, thanked her for giving him the opportunity to share this special moment with them.

As they walked back to the hotel, Cathy grabbed Aaron's arm. "You deserve all of this and more, you know? I'm proud to call myself your sister."

Aaron smiled and ruffled her hair. "And I'm proud to be your brother, Cat."
