Chapter 39: Trust me, lie again
Claire didn't press him further, not yet anyway. There were still too many unknowns in her own investigation. But the seed of doubt had been planted. Her instincts were telling her to be wary, and she couldn't ignore them.
"So, have you heard anything about… you know, the people behind all this? The ones who might be watching me?" she asked, trying to sound casual, but her eyes remained fixed on him.
Vincent hesitated for a moment, his fingers tapping the side of his coffee cup. "No, I haven't heard anything specific, but you need to stay vigilant. You can't let your guard down, Claire. Not now."
"I know," she said softly, her mind racing. "It just feels like it's all closing in on me. I can't shake this feeling that something's coming."
Vincent leaned forward, lowering his voice as if speaking in confidence. "You can always count on me, Claire. You know that, right?"
