Chapter 16 - "The Day Dad Lost to a Cat"

Dad was sleeping peacefully… and then there she was—climbing onto his chest like she owned the place and licking him like he was made of cream!

For a solid two seconds, nothing happened.

Then—

"AAAAAAARGH!!!"

Dad shot up like he'd been hit by a lightning spell, flailing wildly. "WHAT IS THIS? A MONSTER ATTACK? AN ASSASSIN? MARIA, GET THE SWORDS—"

But before he could finish, Noya let out the world's tiniest, most innocent "Meow~" and plopped onto his lap.

Dad froze. He blinked at the tiny fluffball staring up at him, licking her paw like nothing happened. "…What."

Mom walked in, stretching her arms. "Oh, you're up already? Good morning!"

Dad pointed at the kitten. "Maria. Explain."

"Oh, that's Noya! Our new family member!" Mom announced proudly, as if she'd just adopted a royal heir.

Dad's eye twitched. "Excuse me? WHEN did we get a cat?!"

"Last night! Ryuk found her, and I couldn't resist! Look at her! She's adorable!" Mom scooped Noya up and rubbed her cheek against her tiny face.

Dad's expression was priceless. A mix of confusion, betrayal, and the realization that his opinion did not matter in this household. "…We already have a Ryuk and baby Asuna to take care of. Now you're telling me we have a cat too?!"

Mom waved a hand dismissively. "Oh, please, Ryuk practically raises himself. And besides, Noya is just a baby! Look how cute she is!"

Dad looked at me for support. I wisely decided to stare at the ceiling like it was the most fascinating thing in the world.

"Maria," Dad pinched the bridge of his nose, "we are the Blackfyre family! One of the most respected lineages! How does a tiny furball fit into this?!"

As if responding, Noya yawned, rolled onto her back, and let out a soft "Mew~".

Mom gasped. "SHE'S SO PRECIOUS!"

Dad stared at Noya. Noya stared back. A long silence filled the room.

Then Noya, in the ultimate power move, climbed back onto Dad's chest, curled up… and fell asleep.

Dad sighed, utterly defeated.

"I see how it is. I no longer have authority in this house."

Mom patted his shoulder. "You never did, honey. Welcome to reality."

Dad was still processing his loss of authority when Noya, feeling like an absolute queen, stretched, yawned, and decided to move on to her next adventure—baby Asuna's crib.

With a graceful hop (and by graceful, I mean she barely made it and had to claw her way up like a tiny, struggling warrior), she flopped into the crib and curled up beside Asuna.

For a moment, there was peace. A rare, beautiful silence.

Then—

"WAHHHHHHH!!!"

Asuna woke up, eyes wide, staring at the strange fluffy intruder beside her.

Noya blinked. Asuna blinked. A silent conversation passed between them.

Then Asuna, with all the power of a baby who didn't understand personal space, grabbed Noya's tail.

"MEOW!!!"

Absolute chaos. Noya panicked, Asuna giggled, and in the next second, Noya did what any self-respecting cat would do—she climbed onto Asuna's face.

"MARIA!" Dad shouted. "THE CAT IS ATTACKING OUR DAUGHTER!"

"It's not an attack!" Mom rolled her eyes. "She's bonding!"

"Bonding?! She's using Asuna's head as a pillow!"

I, meanwhile, was too busy wheezing with laughter to intervene.

After some dramatic flailing, Asuna managed to shove Noya off her face—only for the kitten to snuggle up beside her again, completely unbothered. Asuna blinked… then slowly reached out and hugged Noya.

A moment of silence.

Then, Asuna, now the happiest baby in the world, started chewing on Noya's ear.

Dad looked horrified. "Maria, do something!"

Mom waved him off. "Oh, please. If Noya didn't like it, she'd move."

Dad looked at me. I just shrugged. "I mean… she's kinda right."

Dad buried his face in his hands. "First, I get licked awake like a dessert, and now my daughter is treating a cat like a teething toy. This is my life now."

Mom smiled, watching the two cuddle. "Yep! Welcome to the Blackfyre family, Noya."

Meanwhile, I stared at the scene, my soul sighing.

"Ryuk practically raises himself," she said.

Yeah, no big deal. Just a 300-year-old soul trapped in a kid's body watching my sister chew on my legendary battle partner. Totally normal.

And thus, Noya's chaotic first day in the Blackfyre house had only just begun.

I sighed, rubbing my temples. Maybe if I just walked away now, I could pretend none of this ever happened.

Yeah, no. That was wishful thinking.

Because at that moment, Noya, our tiny furry overlord, spotted her next conquest—Dad's cloak. Specifically, the loose end draping off his chair.

A tiny twitch of her tail. A moment of intense calculation. Then—she pounced.

"ACK—WHAT THE—?!"

Dad, once a proud and fearsome warrior, was now spinning in circles, flailing like a man possessed.

"MARIAAAA! GET IT OFF ME!"

Mom, sipping her tea like a queen watching the peasant uprising, merely smiled. "Oh, just let her have it, dear."

"LET HER HAVE IT?! SHE'S TRYING TO DRAG ME INTO THE VOID!"

Noya, hanging onto the cloak for dear life, was now in full attack mode—kicking, biting, tail flicking. This wasn't just a game. This was war.

"You don't understand!" Dad gasped between spins. "This is made from the finest enchanted phoenix silk! It's worth—"

RRRIP.

A single, dramatic moment of silence.

Then—

"NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"

Dad fell to his knees, cradling the tattered remains of his once-glorious cloak. He looked up at the ceiling, as if begging the gods to smite him now.

Mom patted his shoulder. "It's just a cloak, honey."

Dad turned to her, eyes full of betrayal. "You don't just replace enchanted phoenix silk, Maria. It's a relic! A masterpiece! A symbol of my—"

Noya yawned, stretched, and immediately started kneading the ruined fabric like it was her new personal bed.

Dad's soul visibly left his body.

I leaned against the doorway, arms crossed. "Wow. So this is what true defeat looks like."

Dad slumped. "She has no respect for history. No fear. No morals."

Mom beamed. "That's my girl!"

Noya, completely unfazed by the emotional destruction she had caused, casually trotted over to my boots and sniffed them. I lifted her up and held her at arm's length and whispered to her. "Alright, listen, you little gremlin. I have fought demon lords, slayed dragons, and saved this world from destruction. You don't scare me."

Noya wiggled.

Then, with the merciless precision of a born warrior—

She licked my nose.

I flinched. My soul momentarily left my body.

Mom clasped her hands together. "Oh, look! She loves you, Ryuk!"

Dad scoffed. "Yes, well, apparently she loved me this morning too. Didn't feel like love."

Mom waved him off. "You just don't understand her affection."

Dad muttered, "Yeah, well, if that's affection, I'd hate to see her 'wrath.'"

I sighed, staring into Noya's smug little face. "Fine. Welcome to the family, I guess. Just… don't destroy anything legendary, okay?"

Noya purred.

I had a bad feeling about this.

And that was the day I realized something.

The Blackfyre household was no longer a home.

It was a kingdom. And Noya?

She was our new queen.
