Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: Night of Misery

There was once a village known for its shaman practices, these people delved into the arts of spiritism. The chief, a married man, committed an act of adultery. Because of his lack of discipline a 'curse' was born.

A child who was in the physical world, but their eyes would be lost in the astral planes. Cursed to see the dead and never the living.

Once knowledge of such a curse came to the ears of the villagers, they gave the mother two choices.

Cast the child into the wilderness on her own or be with them on the outside of the so said home. The mother catered the thoughts of freedom once the child was gone. Freedom from the stares and judgement from others, even if the chief instigated such an act, it was seen as her own fault for inviting him.

The child was thrown into the wilderness, instead of being a victim of the elements and dangers she was saved by the spirits.

They guided her, fed her and taught her many things.

The villagers would catch glimpses of the silver haired girl at the edge of their peaceful home. Sightings of her made them throw stones and attack out of fear, this angered the spirits that grew fond of the child. Unlike humans, spirits are much more honest with their emotions...

And dangerous.

Searing in their anger they possessed the girl, giving her super human strength and a tendency for violence. Thirsting for blood, the girl slaughtered the entire village. Leaving behind a blazing flame that engulfed her previous home, due to the possession lasting for days, she eventually fell unconscious due to exhaustion.

The last thing she saw was something approaching her. It was a mass collection of spirits that clung to the body of a certain man. His face was covered by the ever changing expressions of these lost souls. A hand extended from the amalgamation...

Misery slowly sat up, she felt about the bed until her hands came upon Evelyn. She felt the slow rise and fall of the little girl's chest.

"Still asleep." She smiled. "You must've caused me to dream about my past..." She got up and walked towards the door. To her the world is as it should be, she can see outlined shapes, but her eyes can never see people.

Only the dead.

Everyone thinks she's fully blind, but that's not the case. The environment remains the same, except lost souls were the only things she would encounter. Misery has spent sometime in Brigaden and noticed the few souls that lingered. The one that bugged her the most was the one above Evelyn.

That spirit has been taking residence beside Evelyn from the moment they met her. It's legless light blue form hovered above.

"You can see me?" The spectre asked.

"For a while." Misery answered. "She spoke of your murder, while trying to attack so said murderer."

"She's so impulsive." It frowned. "But I can't move on, I have to watch over her."

"Lingering about will only make you turn into an evil spirit." Misery placed the tips of her fingers together. "Having such thoughts will only bring more harm than good to your own sister."

"Then what should I do?!" It's face contorted. "She's in this world with monsters like him!"

"Trust her with me." Misery simply stated.

"What?" It's face became normal again. A skeptical look came about its eyes. "How can I trust you?"

"I know." Misery got up. "I'll kill your murderer, then you can move on and entrust her to me."

"I..." It couldn't speak.

"If I kill Duke you will entrust Evelyn to me."

Misery spoke of ending Duke's life as if it's a normal task. The second best pugilist in all of Brigaden. He's fought all sorts of men and women, claiming victories either through death or fear.

"You... Can you really do such a thing?" The spirit asked, trying to see if this was a joke or not.

"His death was ever coming." She opened the window, allowing the night's air to drift into the room. "Your timezones are weird, she wondered how it was still night even after 8am. "Still it's perfect for me to handle that guy for you. However, I'll be needing your assistance."

"I can't leave her." It tried to attach itself to the girl. Misery grabbed the spirit by the arm. "Do you want to hurt your sister?!" She shouted.

"What?" Evelyn's voice interrupted the conversation.

"It's nothing, go back to bed." Misery reassured her. She waited until Evelyn was in a deep slumber to continue speaking. "I must look like a crazy person to people." She chuckled. "Even a spirit is questioning my sanity." The remark came carelessly. She opened the lone window of her room, allowing the night's air to travel in.

"I will remove Duke from his mortal coil." Misery leapt through the window and onto the cobblestone street. It's cold sensation resonated with the girl's bare feet.

"Your just trying to kill yourself!" The spirit flew down, it's face contorts into a range of emotions.

"Where is he?" Misery asked.

Silence accompanied the peace of night.

Misery frowned at the hesitation the spirit displayed.

"I've seen him heal grave wounds." It answered. "He tried forcing himself on me, but I blinded him... I'm sure I did, but his eyes grew back." The energy about the spirit became colder. "He changed... He isn't human."

"I know that he isn't human." Misery smirked. "I'm still pissed about that mutt touching me, so it's a fair trade, right?" She extended her pale arms towards the spirit. "If you possess me we can take care of Duke together."

Doubt was tossed to the wind thanks to Misery's words.

"If you can truly kill Duke then I'll entrust my sister to you."
