Anita swatted it away.
"Get away from me!" she snapped.
Ava froze, her face a mixture of shock and hurt.
Had she done something wrong? She had barely spoken to anyone outside Dennis and a handful of pack members.
"Have I done something wrong?" she asked cautiously.
Anita let out a humorless chuckle as she picked herself up. "Have you?"
Ava blinked, confused.
Anita dusted off her pants and crossed her arms, glaring. "Since you got here, we haven't had a moment's peace. If you know what's good for you, leave. We don't want you here. Neither do we want Lucas here."
The farm fell silent.
Everyone had stopped what they were doing, pretending not to eavesdrop while very obviously eavesdropping.
Ava felt like the earth had just opened up beneath her.
She knew she wasn't exactly the most welcomed guest, but hearing it said so plainly? It stung.
Dennis, who had overheard the exchange, wiped his hands on his shirt and approached.
