Chapter 34 - Betrayal

Seeing two people flying caught the attention of the soldiers, especially those belonging to the dynasty. Only high-level magicians could fly freely in the sky for long distances, especially carrying another person. The wind magicians recognized the famous titled magician. Morals rose to the heavens, and the soldiers burst in praise.

'Long live Master Robalt.'

'Robalt, Robalt. Robalt.'

The soldiers shouted with a renewed spirit; the dragons did not understand the reason for such upheaval. From their point of view, the newcomer was just another magician.

'Leader Meneol. It's a pleasure to finally meet you. I'm Robalt, Lord of the Winds. Tittled magician of the dynasty. Excuse my delay; I was on a special mission for the dynasty. The kings thank you for the confidence placed in our troops. We believe in this alliance, and we want to demonstrate that. For that reason, they have sent me to strengthen the front. I can assure you that, unlike other kingdoms, the dynasty is willing to devote all its resources to defending your world.' Robalt spoke these words out loud, trying to provoke the other kingdoms. If his little game went well, he could incite the other kingdoms to send their titled magicians to the front lines.

'Thank you for your words, Master Robalt. We are grateful for your cooperation.' Meneol replied without knowing exactly what the role of the master would be.

'Let's start right now, then. If you give me a few seconds to prepare, I think you will find my wind magic very useful. Prepare your dragons to launch an attack on my signal.' The master rose up in the air, flying alongside the dragons.

Robalt looked up at the sky; there was a lot of smoke from the flames of the dragons. The master closed his eyes for a few seconds. As if nature obeyed a god, the wind began to blow strongly. Even dragons had some difficulty staying stable in the air. Robalt began to move his hands in a circular motion. Two tornadoes formed in the eternal night, and the two wind columns began to drag all the monsters that lived inside the miasma.

'Dragons, you can use your flames now,' cried Robalt. His voice, enhanced by his wind magic, succeeded in overcoming the storm roar.

The dragons opened their fauces, and their fire mixed with the tornadoes, creating two rotating columns of fire whose destructive heat incinerated everything on its way. The master manipulated the movement of both fire tornadoes, destroying it all within the eternal night.

"Impressive!" Meneol thought. Like many other dragons and army members did.

Although it was true that the master's power was indescribable, he was only a man. Minutes later, his magical energy was exhausted. Forcing him to make his magic disappear before the symptoms of magic depletion appeared. However, the effect of his attack on the enemy was significant.

'Impressive master Robalt. I can see why the soldiers were praising you so fiercely,' said Levi.

'I agree. Your destructive power is admirable. How long until we can count on your power again?' asked Meneol.

'It would take about six hours for my magic energy to recover... hmm, a quarter of your lunar cycles.' The master answered in between deep breaths.

'I understand; we hope to count on you in the future, Master,' added Meneol.

'The pleasure will be mine.'

The new high spirits of the troops, the strength added by the master, and the optimism of the dragons made the army of the alliance more effective, allowing them to recover several kilometers of territory. Though the other kingdoms had been left in a bad light, they still would not risk sending to the head the only titled master they possessed. The dynasty still counted on Master Emeral to defend its territory. They had nothing left; most of their troops were already fighting in the dragon world.

"Bah, they didn't take the bait," thought Robalt after two weeks on the front lines. It was a pity; the dynasty could control the entire continent if they got rid of the titled magicians of both kingdoms. In any case, it was time to proceed to the next stage. 'Leader Meneol, our enemy has lost foot on the front; we should attack now. We have a plan, but its success depends on your cooperation. We've finished our work around the All Father. Everything is ready; we only need to start here.' Proposed Robalt.

'I understand. What should we do?' asked Meneol.

'We have engraved magic circles in the field around the eternal night. These circles will connect you directly to the Great Father. That, coupled with my wind magic, should give us enough strength to recover all the lost territory and even invade the eternal night. I warn you, at first you will feel a little discomfort, a slight weakness; this is normal; then you should experience an increase in power,' Robalt explained.

'Well, let's start.' Agreed Meneol.

As the dragons occupied their positions, they noticed that a large part of the dynasty's troops were withdrawing. According to the explanations of the master and the army leaders belonging to the dynasty, these troops were to collaborate with the manipulation and activation of the diagrams around the All Father. They needed a lot of people; it was a huge territory to cover. The rest of the army placed themselves in front of the dragons to prevent an enemy attack as they prepared their new weapon. Like on previous occasions, several members of the army knew that it was an arcane magic spell. But everybody ignored it. It was not the first time it had been used since the beginning of the conflict.

Esmirna began to recite her spell while her right hand was placed on a diagram. Her left hand was placed over the diagram on which Meneol stood.

'Ugh.' Meneol and all the dragons lost the strength of their legs and fell to the ground. A white column ascended to the sky in front of the dragons, covering the eternal night and trapping the human troops on the other side.

'What is going on?' asked the soldiers.

The faces of the intermediate commanders of other kingdoms and of the residual troops of the dynasty became pale.

"This is a restraint wall. They're going to sacrifice us all.′ Cliford thought, turning around and looking at the myasma moving forward. Without the dragons, the magic of the fire magicians would be exhausted in minutes. Soon they'd be trapped inside the miasma.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the white wall.

'Master Robalt, whats the meaning of this?' Reivax's warnings resounded in Meneol's mind. Esmirna's words were interpreted by his brain; they were sacrificing them.

'In the end, Princess Mable was right. You guys are just giant lizards. Do you still not understand?' replied Robalt.

Menéol's pupils dilated. "The part of the army that detached, humans betrayed us... the larvae," he thought, looking at the distance.

'Entela, Entela, yell feve afric, del lev acta. Manel lev acta.′

'Nal canto a gaw'

'What are you going to do to the All Father? Reivax, the larvae. You can't do this; our worlds will perish,' Meneol cried.

'No, only yours.' Robert shrugged his shoulders with total disinterest.

From the ground, Baham looked at the conversation, confused. Meneol was the leader of the clan, but he was the second-largest of the dragons. Baham was almost twice his size but as dumb as a rock. He looked at Meneol and Robalt several times until he could understand what was happening. As if a volcano were erupting, Baham rose from the ground. The giant began to ram his body against the invisible wall that surrounded him and kept him trapped in the diagram.

'Entela, Entela, yell feve afric, del lev acta. Manel lev acta.′

'Nal canto a gaw'

As the spell was recited, the dragons became weaker. However, Baham continued to clash against the invisible wall. He opened his mouth and spitted a sea of flames; the fire bounced off the invisible wall and covered the inside of the diagram. Meneol began to copy his example. The other dragons could barely rise from the ground.

'Entela, Entela, yell feve afric, del lev acta. Manel lev acta.′

'Nal canto a gaw'

'By the heavens, stop fighting now; you will not get out of there,' said Robalt, annoyed at the overgrown reptiles struggle.

A new wave of fire flooded Meneol and Baham diagrams. Baham rushed again against the invisible wall with all the brute force of which he was able. His head slowly managed to pass through the barrier; his skin had been crushed in the process, and even his hard scales had turned into dust. Baham continued to force his body through with a desperate cry until he managed to pass to the other side.

Robalt was prepared to attack him when a gust of fire attacked him, and he was forced to evade. A skinned Bahan rushed like a maniac towards the nest. His wings had no membranes, and his skinless muscles could be seen to contract with every movement. There was a trace of blood behind him. The other dragons could only observe from a distance, as they weakened with each repetition of Esmirna's spell.

Meneol's head, still trapped in the invisible wall, continued to throw flames towards Robalt while the master was preparing to hunt Baham. Meneol tried to push his body further across the barrier and attack Esmirna. Robalt realized and forgot about Baham to attack on Meneol.

'Let's see you use your fire without air.' With a movement of his hand, the air around Meneol disappeared.

The dragon continued to try to force his body through the wall. His skinless face gave him a frightening appearance. Two giant rows of teeth without flesh around them showed themselves in all their splendor as a death sentence to all who were within his reach.

'Entela, Entela, yell feve afric, del lev acta. Manel lev acta.′

'Nal canto a gaw'

Every time Esmirna repeated her enchantment, the wall became stronger and the dragons weakened. Meneol's legs lost their strength, and he fell to the ground. Now his whole body was inside the diagram. "Run, Baham, save the larvae." Meneol thought before losing consciousness.

'Entela, Entela, yell feve afric, del lev acta. Manel lev acta.′

'Nal canto a gaw'

'It is done, the spell is complete,' said Esmirna with a smile on her face.

'Esmirna, are you all right?' asked Robalt, concerned. Smyrna's face had a red blush and a wide smile; her eyes were bright; and her face was full of pure ecstasy.

'Yes, I'm fine; all that power, Master, think about it; we could...'

'Esmirna!' exclaimed the master. 'You have just completed a very powerful arcane magic spell; don't fall into the frenzy.'

'Master Robalt, I'm fine; I am better than ever. I feel incredible.'

Robalt lifted up his hand; the air around Smyrna disappeared; she began to suffocate; she fell into despair and stopped thinking, just grasping her hands to her throat in agony. Robalt moved his hands again after a few seconds; the air returned, and Esmirna managed to take a deep breath.

'Better now?' asked Robalt, still in high alert and ready to attack.

'Yes, Master, thank you. I don't know what happened to me. I...'

'Don't worry about it; it's the arcane frenzy. You were just starting to develop it; you should be fine. We have to guard this area; we don't know if any of the dragons can still try something. They may be only ignorant beasts, but their strength cannot be denied.' As he said this, the master was thinking. "She seems to be fine, but if I leave her alone, she could go crazy or something. Killing her is not an option; I need an arcane magician here in case something happens. The troops we sent to deal with that old dragon and worms should be able to kill that wounded dragon." Robalt looked at the blood trail that Baham had left in his way. "He doesn't have much time anyway." His years of experience hunting monsters told him so.
