Chapter 14 - Prologue: Older Brother

Von was always known as a prodigy, there isn't anything he couldn't figure out by himself… He was known as one who can rival the genius of Arthur Rein.

At birth he was already built with muscle, muscle that not even people with years of training can get… He never cried, he never asked questions… Parenting him wasn't even like parenting a child, it was more like giving him what he needs.

At seven, he picked up a metal sword for the first time, swinging it with ease, by then Julian knew that Von wasn't just your average noble born child, he was a genius.

Julian wasn't sure what to teach his three year old son, no way in hell he would be teaching him swordplay, right? The boy is three years old, it doesn't matter if he can swing a sword which is heavier than him with ease…

Von Notros-Farion

My name is Von Notros-Farion, the eldest son of the duke of Feris…

I was born in Feris, an agricultural land filled with wheat fields and hills with tall trees. From birth I was determined to become the next head of the family, even when I'm only half human…

My mother was an elf, a beautiful one at that, one where even compared to other elves stand out as the exception. Like most children raised in noble houses, I was taught to defend myself from an early age, this was important, it was basically a must for any high class noble, assassinations were common, people would do anything to ascend to power, even kill their own siblings.

I loved swordplay, training was always my favorite time of the day, I was sure that dad was a bit annoyed when I became stronger than him at the young age of 10. I thought little of the world, I was sure that no one in this world could compete with my talent, to be honest there wasn't… Until now.

I would call myself a rather good child, I never argued against my parents, I did my best in school, I never disobeyed nor did I rebel… I learned to play the role of the perfect child, I had to be the expectations were too high for me to fail, it would make father lose face… I don't want that.

I looked up to my father, Julian Notros-Farion, he was a work machine, one that puts work over everything excluding family. He was a hard worker from my point of view, somehow even after all that work he would find ways to return and practice with me.

I respected him, I respected him a lot…

Things continued as it was throughout the years, nothing really changed until I got the invitation to enroll into the Royal Knights Academy in the Royal Capital. I never really wanted to go, I thought that it was already enough… Fuck the Royal Knights or whatever, I'm already an Imperial class swordsman in the Rampage style, why would I even need to do whatever they do in the academy.

Father convinced me to go…

I wasn't wrong, there wasn't much for me to learn, I didn't even have a single opponent in the academy, not even the teachers teaching in the 'best' school were able to beat me…

I was arrogant as I continued to win every duel I fought in, I thought no one in the world could beat me.

I was wrong… One man challenged me, I never got to know his name. Under a hood was the man's long red hair flowing as each one of his sword swings slashed through the air as if air resistance wasn't a thing… It was law defying… When our blades clashed it was like the fabric of the universe itself was crumbling, the earth shook beneath us, a large burst of mana filled the cold air, heat— Heat as hot as magma of the hottest volcano, the screeching of the swords during the clash… My sword was thrown aback, I had lost, just when I thought that I was the strongest, this man showed me the world.

That was six years ago. Slowly but surely I became more and more interested in school, my goal was to surpass the man… But I never got to see him again.

Currently I'm a master class swordsman, one of the four in the Midgard kingdom. Also… I just graduated after eleven years of school.

Soooo… Now what do I do?

I sat in my dormitory, my back laid against the soft cushions on my bed, next to me my sword and utilities.

I was confused, Father told me that if I went to school I could get something in return from the kingdom, what I initially thought was some sort of knight rank or something… Later I thought that it could be the title of noble…

I still don't know what I got back, maybe more knowledge, maybe a more humble attitude?

Sigh—

Something caught my eye… Outside the window was a pigeon, on its feet tied a small piece of parchment, classic pigeon mail… The pigeon was slamming its head on the window.

"Oh my… You dumb bird…" I uttered as I walked up to open up the window to let the pigeon in.

The pigeon flew in flying around frantically before settling down perching itself atop my bed…

"Sigh— you really do be making yourself comfortable, don't you, Roo?" I muttered, "Okay then, let's see what you bring me today…"

I looked down upon the tiny piece of parchment, within an instant I knew who this was from… The beautiful cursive handwriting, at the point where there's a tick or hook the letters would curl up into a sharp ended spiral.

On the letter it writes…

[Firstly congratulations on your graduation, since this is a pigeon mail I won't have much space to write a lot so let me get straight to the point, your mother is pregnant again. This is just information I thought that you should know, there isn't much more for me to say but I'm not forcing you to return home now, but if you have the chance please visit every now and then. —Julian Notros Farion]

The letter wasn't long, there wasn't too much mentioned in the letter, it was just a short brief… The writing was distant… Father always wrote like this, talking to me like I am a fellow nobleman…

I'm still his son.

"I guess it has been nearly three years since I last went back to the mansion." I mumbled before flopping back onto my bed, Roo startled flies up frantically flapping its wings.

Twit! Twit!

Roo tweeted sharply as if it was mad at me for giving it a fright.

"Shoo— Shoo—" I said, giving it a wave.

I guess I'll head home for a bit before figuring what to do in the future… Maybe I can go become an adventurer, that sounds pretty fun… I'm sure that mother would be happy, but I'm not so sure about father, I mean he did become an adventurer a few years back.

"Alrighty… That should be a good enough plan… Sigh— I'm pretty bad at doing this type of stuff, ain't I?"

//

I went out soon after, returning my dormitory keys and for the first time in eleven years left the school for good.

I guess I should get myself set for the future when I'm still in the Royal Capital, things work more efficiently here, right? To be honest I don't have much of a clue about adventuring, I have always dreamed of becoming an adventurer, doing quests here and there and ridding the world of infestive monsters… This was what I thought adventuring was like from the stories I heard from Mother as a kid.

I walked through the crowded streets of the Royal Capital of Midgard, the Capital was alway loud and bussing, there wasn't really a time where it's quiet, not even at night, then clubs would thrive and people walked around the bars and shady shops… Where people drank beer while chattering drunk.

"Ahh— I would miss this place, wouldn't I? Half my life was spent here…"

The adventurer's guild was right ahead…

//

After registering I went out, through the tall walls surrounding the city I walked, the instant I left the crowded lot fresh air bursted into my nostrils, flaring them I took in a deep inhale… "Ahh—" I sighed.

Dragging my muscular tall horse behind me on a leash, I began walking, heading back to where I originated from… Home sweet home.
