Inside the car, Amelia nestled into the plush leather seat, her hand resting on Kai's thigh. His fingers absentmindedly played with hers, tracing the lines of her palm like he was memorizing her all over again.
She glanced at him. He looked relaxed, his gaze out the tinted window as if lost in thought. A small smile tugged at her lips as a memory surfaced, then she chuckled quietly.
Kai turned to her, one brow raised. "What's so funny?"
She leaned her head back, eyes glimmering with amusement. "I was just remembering the first time I sat in this car. You'd just picked me up off the street. I was standing outside because the hotel had kicked me out with my suitcase in the rain. And you… you were so cold that night."
Kai's lips curled into a faint smile, eyes dropping to their intertwined hands. "Well," he said softly, "I'm glad I picked you up that night."
From the front, the driver listened silently, his lips twitching upward in amusement.
