Chapter 160 - Chapter 155: The Cost of Victory

Chapter 155: The Cost of Victory

The Battlefield – Aftermath

The air was thick with the acrid smell of sulfur and burnt mana. The once-teeming battlefield was now silent, save for the hum of Imperium machinery and the distant cries of the wounded. The rift was gone, its chaotic energy replaced by a faint shimmer of residual magic, but the cost of the battle lay strewn across the ground.

Jack stood at the center of the ruins, his black combat suit streaked with dirt and ash. Around him, mana-fusion tanks and APCs remained in formation, scanning for any lingering threats. Valkyrie-class fighters circled overhead, their reconnaissance systems scanning the area for demonic stragglers.

Eve's holographic form appeared beside him, her tone clinical as always. "Final casualty report for the Imperium: 146 soldiers killed, 32 critically wounded. Equipment losses include three mana-fusion tanks, one Stormclaw helicopter, and two APCs."

Jack's jaw tightened. "And the elves?"

Eve's voice remained steady. "Elven casualties are higher: 532 soldiers killed, 764 wounded. Their lighter armor and lack of shielding made them more vulnerable during the engagement."

Jack's gaze shifted to the nearby elven forces. Many stood solemnly over the bodies of their fallen comrades, their glowing runes dimmed. Eryndra, her silver hair streaked with blood, walked among them, offering quiet words of comfort to her people.

"And the Holy Kingdom's forces?" Jack asked.

"Minimal contribution," Eve replied. "No notable casualties due to their limited involvement. They arrived too late to assist meaningfully."

Jack's expression darkened. "Typical."

Eryndra's Grief

As Jack approached the elven camp, he found Eryndra kneeling beside the body of an elven warrior. Her hands rested gently on the soldier's chest, her eyes closed as she whispered a prayer in her native tongue. Around her, other elves stood in silent mourning.

"Eryndra," Jack said softly, his voice uncharacteristically gentle.

She looked up, her silver eyes glistening with unshed tears. "So many... I thought we were prepared. Your technology gave us an edge, but against a Demon General, it wasn't enough."

Jack crouched beside her, his gaze steady. "They fought bravely. Without your people's magic, we wouldn't have been able to close the rift. They made a difference."

Eryndra gave a bitter laugh. "A difference? Tell that to the families waiting for them back home."

Jack didn't respond immediately. He understood the weight of her grief, but he also knew the necessity of sacrifice. "Their sacrifice wasn't in vain. The rift is closed, and the demons are weakened. That's more than most battles can claim."

She looked at him, her expression softening slightly. "Do you ever let yourself feel it, Jack? The weight of the lives we lose?"

Jack's gaze drifted to the horizon. "I feel it every day. But I can't afford to let it stop me."

The Soldiers' Perspective

Back among the Imperium's forces, the mood was mixed. While the soldiers celebrated their victory, there was a palpable sense of loss. Groups of infantry gathered around makeshift memorials, placing tokens of remembrance for their fallen comrades.

In one corner of the camp, Lieutenant Kael addressed his squad. "We lost good men and women out there," he said, his voice heavy. "But we held the line. We did our job, and because of that, the rift is gone."

Private Lain, the youngest member of the squad, spoke up hesitantly. "Sir, do you think it's worth it? Losing so many for one battle?"

Kael placed a hand on the young soldier's shoulder. "We don't fight because it's easy, Lain. We fight because if we don't, no one else will. That's what being part of the Imperium means—standing when others can't."

Around them, other soldiers nodded in agreement, their morale bolstered by Kael's words.

Reactions Across the Continent

The destruction of the rift near the Sylvan Enclave sent shockwaves across the continent. News of the Celestial Imperium's victory spread rapidly, sparking both awe and fear among the other kingdoms.

In the Holy Kingdom, the council convened in hushed urgency. "If Jack can destroy a rift with that level of efficiency, what else is he capable of?" one noble asked, his voice laced with concern.

"The demons are the enemy," another countered. "We should be thanking him for what he's done."

But Derek, still bitter from the previous battles, slammed his fist on the table. "Jack isn't a savior. He's a conqueror. And if we're not careful, we'll be his next target."

Sarah, seated nearby, frowned. "He saved lives, Derek. Whether you like it or not, his Imperium is the only reason we're still fighting."

In the northern territories, distant rulers debated whether to ally with or oppose the Imperium. Some saw Jack as a necessary force against the demons, while others feared the growing power of his empire.

A New Objective

Back at the war room in Solara Prime, Jack and his advisors regrouped to plan their next move. A new holographic map displayed the remaining rifts across the continent, their locations marked in glowing red.

General Callan gestured to one near the western coast. "This rift is our next priority. It's in a heavily populated area, and the demons are already spreading into nearby villages."

Eryndra leaned over the map, her tone resolute. "My people will assist again. We can't let this spread any further."

Jack nodded. "We'll double our efforts. I want upgraded plasma weapons and heavier shielding on all frontline units. Special forces will focus on taking out commanders and destabilizing the rift."

Eve's voice chimed in. "Commander, Astra has provided additional data on the rifts. She believes there may be a way to permanently neutralize their energy sources, but it will require significant resources and time."

Jack's gaze sharpened. "Then we'll allocate the resources. If there's a way to end this war for good, we'll find it."

The Elven Accord

Before the Imperium's forces departed, Jack met with Eryndra in private to discuss their alliance. The room was quiet, the weight of the recent battle still hanging heavily in the air.

"You've proven your strength, Jack," Eryndra said. "But strength alone won't win this war. The demons are relentless, and their magic is older than anything we've seen."

"That's why we need to combine our resources," Jack replied. "Your people's magic and our technology are the only way forward."

Eryndra studied him for a moment, then extended her hand. "Then let's make it official. An alliance between the Celestial Imperium and the Sylvan Enclave. Together, we'll end this."

Jack took her hand, his grip firm. "Together."
