The White Woman was once a young noble lady who fell in love with a man below her social class.
Her family were therefore furious at her disobedience to break up with the poor man and locked her away in a remote castle or convent.
Some say she died there of sorrow, while others say she was murdered by her own family to erase the shame she brought upon them.
After her death, her ghost began appearing in the streets of Bern, dressed in a flowing white gown, looking as pale as the moon, and weeping softly.
Seeing the White Woman is an omen of disaster.
People have said that they have seen her in dark alleyways, near the Zytglogge clock tower, or by the Aare River, always disappearing into the mist.
