ORIGIN: Paris, France.
The legend of The Phantom of the Paris Opera has haunted the Palais Garnier for over a century, inspiring myths, ghost stories, and even Gaston Leroux's famous 1910 novel, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.
The story tells of a mysterious, disfigured man who stays just beneath the opera house and controls events from within the shadows, scaring performers and patrons alike.
The legend comes from real life events and creepy occurrences at the opera house.
During the late 19th century there were strange accidents and unexplained noises that led to people whispering of a ghost's presence.
The most awful incident happened in 1896, when a counterweight from the massive chandelier, hanging down from the high ceilings, fell down into the audience, killing a spectator.
Many said it was the work of the Phantom, who they believed lived in the labyrinthine tunnels and underground lake beneath the building.
According to legend, the Phantom was once a former architect or escaped prisoner, disfigured and forced to live in secrecy.
Then he fell in love with a young soprano, and started manipulating her career so she could be with him forever while also punishing all who crossed him.
