Chapter 21 - The Battle of Pyongyang: The greatest Roman victory

Year: 1265 AD

Caesarian Empire

The Caesarian Emperor Leo IV, after learning that King John Gojong surrendered to the Mongols, becoming their vassal and with that the Mongols were in control of the Silk Road and this hindered the plans of the Caesarian Empire, then The Romans went to war against the Mongols to end the last great horde in history.

Emperor Leo IV sent another 250,000 soldiers to reconquer Korea and expel the Mongols from the Korean peninsula, in what was the most successful military operation of the Central Middle Ages.

In the summer of 1260, in the port city Dongnae, dozens of ships Romulus Alpha and Romulus Omega were seen flying the flag of the seven hills of Rome which meant that the Caesarian navy would invade Korea.

Those responsible for the military operation were the pair of young brothers , Legatus Legionis of the 15th Caesarian Legion Claudius Theodosius and Classis Nova Romanorum Flavius Theodosius Magnus, both sons of Magister Militum Andreas Theodosius Tertullian, they demonstrated great abilities in each respective area.

The future city of Busan, at that time Dongnae, was taken by the Caesarian Empire and thus began the Caesarian-Mongol War.

The first month was one of rapid conquests, important cities such as Hanyang, the future city of Seoul in the centuries after the Mongol invasion, the Goreyo dynasty collapsed and the Mongol Empire sent about 300,000 slaves coming from China and Central Asia and 50 thousand Mongol heavy infantry soldiers and the fearsome Mongol cavalry, the clash between Romans and Mongols began.

In the autumn of 1261, the Siege of Hanyang took place, about 40 thousand soldiers on the Mongol side died trying to take Hanyang and on the Roman side about 150 died, thus becoming the first major defeat of the Mongol Empire, since Ain Jalut about one year ago.

With this victory, the Caesarian Empire maintained control over much of Korea and the Koreans themselves joined forces against the Mongols.

In the summer of 1262, the Caesarian army launched Operation Aurelian, a large-scale attack on the city of Gaegyong, the operation became a success and practically all of Korea was under the control of the Caesarian Empire, with this victory the Mongol Empire lost around 250 thousand soldiers in this operation and as retaliation, the Mongol Empire sent more than 2 million Chinese slaves and 10000 bronze cannons, for the first time the Mongols used cannons to break formations, which means that the Mongol Empire would begin a change in the way of combat, however it remained in the Far East.

In the summer of 1263, the Mongol Empire launched a massive attack on the city of Gaegyong, in which the Romans and Koreans killed about 450,000 soldiers killed on the Mongol side, but the Mongols still took Gaegyong and the Koreans were skinned for resisting the Mongols, the same happened to the Romans who defended the city, this event became known as the Sack of Gaegyong, the capital of the The Goreyo Dynasty was reduced to ashes and this event made the Caesarian Empire know for the first time in centuries what it was like to face barbarians.

The Mongol Empire then gets excited and orders more large-scale attacks on important cities in Korea, Wonsam, the second largest city in northern Korea, was reduced to ashes, Pyongyang was taken and the Koreans were killed en masse, the Caesarean Empire then retreated with the Koreans to Hanyang, thus thousands of lives were saved and soon the city was suffering from overcrowding.

The brothers Claudius and Flavius Theodosius sent letters to Emperor Leo IV about the situation in Korea and that they needed more Palatine bombards to defeat the Mongols, but none of them were being answered, which meant that Prince Antonius was interfering politically to prevent a probable ascension of the Theodosians to the Caesarian throne, with this the brothers then started to create the first missile launcher with any accuracy and the first siege artillery.

In the winter of 1264, an ambassador from the Mongol Empire arrived in Hanyang and came to propose a peace treaty in which a white peace would be maintained and Korea would be divided between the Romans and the Mongols, the brothers Theodosius denied such an agreement and arrested the ambassador, thus increasing tensions in Korea.

In January 1265, after long tests, the Neo-Scipio was created, the world's first reliable missile launcher, using small irons inspired by the shape of Chinese fireworks, It has the ability to launch 50 rockets which has a system similar to the Incendiary Bullet. And at the end of that month, the Mongol Slayer was created, the world's first siege artillery that fired in parabolas, It is about 150 mm long and can reach 2000 meters, making this another one of the great military inventions that the Romans created.

In February, Claudius Theodosius gathered about 40,000 Koreans and 30,000 soldiers from the Caesarian army to show off their technological superiority to the Mongols and he took with him about 10 Neo-Scipio,75 Palatine bombards and 5 Mongol Slayers, left Hanyang under his brother's control.

By March he had achieved convincing victories against the Mongols and now the gigantic Mongol army had settled in Pyongyang, so a period was spent recruiting Koreans to join the battle that would change the fate of Korea.

Claudius was confident that he could defeat the Mongols in a pitched battle, for now the situation had reversed, the Mongols were massing in Pyongyang as a last defense, as the army The Mongols sent a large part of that army to contain the rebellions in China, so what was previously around 1 million and 550 thousand became 400 thousand Mongol soldiers in Korea.

Claudius, now 20 years old, but looking like a 25-year-old man due to the horrors of war against the Mongols, prepared to finally contain the Mongol threat.

He had gathered about 90 thousand soldiers to conquer Pyongyang, so he called a Korean who knew how to speak the Mongolian language and he ordered:

"Tell the Mongols that we Romans will give them a chance to fight fairly, get your entire army ready for battle or I will give you punishment in the style you did in Baghdad." Claudius ordered.

The Korean soldier gets on a horse and goes to the gates of the city of Pyongyang and translates to the Mongols what Claudius ordered, the Mongols' reaction was fury and they killed the Korean soldier with a rain of arrows, which meant that the Mongols would resist to the end.

In his tent, Claudius learned that the messenger had been killed, so he says the military:

"Prepare the soldiers for battle, they asked for it and now they will bitterly regret having done such a thing, we will kill until the last Mongolian in Pyongyang is killed In the most brutal way possible, these savage Mongols think they can beat us Romans, let's show what a Roman is made." says Claudius.

The soldiers leave the tent and Claudius takes his neo-spatha and his revolver, puts on his lamellar and his New Cyprus helmet and says:

"From today onwards, the Mongols will fear us Romans." says Claudius.

Pyongyang surroundings

A few hours ago

The Caesarian army was ready for battle, Claudius on his horse joined the other leaders who were also on horseback and explained how they would defeat the Mongols:

"Each flank leader will have 3 Neo-Scipio, over a thousand iron rockets, 8 Palatine bombards, 600 granite bullets, 400 iron bullets, 250 Incendiary Bullets, 1 Mongol Slayer,The main objective is to exterminate the Mongols, do not take hostages, any Mongol noble must be killed like the Chinese slaves they use to increase their ranks." explains Claudius.

The soldiers left and went to their respective places, lasting about a few minutes until Claudius removed his revolver from the holster and fired a shot into the air and ordered:

"Artillery!!!! Destroy the walls of Pyongyang and kill all the Mongols!!!! Fire!!!!" orders Claudius.

The next moment, hundreds of missiles are thrown at the wall, causing cracks in the wall, and soon after, cannon fire is heard throughout the battle.

After about an hour of battle, the wall fell and the Mongols who were inside the city sent light infantry to attack, in response Claudius ordered the Palatine bombards to be used granite bullets to break the morale of the besieged.

Two hours later, thousands of soldiers could be seen fleeing the battlefield, but it was not yet time to invade Pyongyang.

Seeing the sunset, Claudius then orders the soldiers:

"Advance!!! We will defeat the Mongols today!!!!! Charge!!!!" orders Claudius.

Thousands of soldiers advance, making the earth tremble before the advance of the Caesarian army. The Mongols inside the city become desperate and try to mount a defense with what is left to defend the city.

Streets of Pyongyang

Now

Claudius was leading the attack and every Mongol he killed caused the soldiers to continue the attack.

Claudius, entering a street, meets a Mongol general who shouts something in his language, but he soon takes out his revolver and says:

"Go to hell!!! Mongolian scum!!!" says Claudius.

Claudius shoots the Mongol general in the belly and he falls to the ground lifeless, his subordinates came to attack with their swords and Claudius shot at his subordinates who soon also fell.

Now without any bullets, Claudius holstered his revolver and drew his neo-spatha for a hand-to-hand fight.

Claudius then encountered a group of elite Mongol soldiers and what appeared to be their leader spoke a different Latin that he knew and introduced himself:

"Greetings Sons of Theodosius, I am the Tolui Totqamish, Urluk of the Mongol army, I defeated the Poles in the Battle of Legnica, I participated in the Siege of Baghdad and three years ago I defeated a coalition of the Kingdom of Poland, the Holy Roman Empire, the Kingdom of France and the Kingdom of England, in the battle of Krakow, thanks to some soldiers that I kept as a slave, I learned to speak their language.Currently our Khan is expanding into Anatolia and we find our cousins the Turks in a place that should have belonged to the Eastern Romans, but that doesn't matter, they were fighting the Poles and the French in Eastern Europe, when I learned that you the Sons of Theodosius intervened in Korea and the Khan sent me to be the leader of the Mongol defense and I sincerely do not regret it, you are more formidable than the Europeans, you use these weapons with an iron tube and they have devastating potential, but you still cannot defeat us, we are the greatest conquerors in the world, We have overcome the Roman Empire and the Umayyad Caliphate, no one can stop us, from Warsaw to Pyongyang, the horde rules the world." Tolui introduces himself.

Claudius' reaction was one of astonishment when he heard a guttural voice speaking a different Latin, something that made him wonder if it wasn't some crazy dream.

Tolui then orders his soldiers:

""Kill this Roman!!! It's an order!!!" orders Tolui.

The Mongol elite soldiers advanced and before they got close, bullets pierced the Mongol armor and killed the Mongol elite soldiers, a Centuriom had arrived with the arquebusiers and he submerges himself from the arquebusier legionaries and says:

"Centuriom Harald at your service, Legatus Legionis Claudius Theodosius." says Harald.

Tolui was simply terrified when he first heard a gunshot, which made him kneel before Claudius, who ordered Harald:

"Centuriom Harald, give me two Fulminatrix, I will give this savage barbarian a chance to defend himself in a duel the Paulista way." orders Claudius.

Harald then hands over his Fulminatrix to Claudius and another legionary gives his Fulminatrix to the Mongol Urluk.

Tolui still couldn't believe what was happening. He was one of the most brilliant soldiers in the Mongol Empire and lost a battle with 400,000 soldiers at his disposal. This was inconceivable in his head. Then he took the Fulminatrix and shouted:

"DAMN ROMANS!!!! I AM A URLUK, I WILL NEVER LOSE TO THE ROMANS!!!!" shouted Tolui.

Tolui was going to shoot, but Claudius reacted quickly and shot Tolui who ended up dying, but to make sure Claudius decapitates Tolui's head, grabs your head and says:

"That will be the end of those who dare to face the Caesarian Empire, death!" says Claudius.

The legionaries applaud Claudius and the Norwegian Centuriom says:

"Here is our new emperor! Long live Claudius I, the Mongol-Slayer!" says Harald.

"Hooray!!! Hooray!!!" say the legionaries.

The Battle of Pyongyang ended with over 250,000 soldiers killed on the Mongolian side and 150,000 soldiers on the Mongolian side fled the battle, while about 900 soldiers on the Caesarean side died, This was the greatest military victory of the Caesarian Empire in the Central Middle Ages, however the greatest victory of the Caesarian Empire would be at the Battle of Damietta in the 16th century.

Korea for fifty years was one of the great regions of the Caesarian Empire, until in 1315, the Caesarian Empire rebuilt the entire Korea and gave power back to the Koreans who a few months later would succeed the dynasty that would last the longest in Korean history: The Joseon Dynasty.
