We all sat down as the match began, watching intently as Issei and Koneko entered the gym. Koneko wasted no time, swiftly taking down one of Riser's Rooks without even getting hit. Issei, on the other hand, struggled a little—he was still new to this, after all. He needed more experience, more time to hone his skills. But despite his difficulties, he managed to secure a victory, and the two of them exited the gym.
Just as they stepped outside, a sudden burst of magic shot toward them. Riser's Queen had been lying in wait.
My eyes widened in horror as Koneko reacted on instinct, shoving Issei out of the way and taking the full force of the attack. The blast sent her crashing into the ground, creating a crater from the sheer impact.
"KONEKO!" I shouted, immediately rising from my seat, my entire body tensing.
All eyes turned toward me, but I ignored them, my focus entirely on the battlefield.
Then, before I could act, Koneko jumped out of the crater, completely unfazed. She darted forward with incredible speed and delivered a brutal punch to Riser's Queen's stomach, sending her flying into a tree. Without missing a beat, Koneko followed up with a sharp kick to the head, making the Queen stumble. That was all the opening Akeno needed—she unleashed a powerful bolt of lightning, striking the Queen and forcing her to resign from the Rating Game.
I let out a deep sigh of relief, sinking back into my seat as I ran a hand through my hair. I could hear soft chuckles from the people around me, amused by how much I had been worrying.
Koneko was panting now, exhaustion beginning to settle in. I clenched my fists—this battle was taking a toll on her.
Still, there was no time to rest. The team took off toward the final battlefield.
….
Only Riser remained.
Rias's entire peerage was still standing, but Koneko, Issei, and Kiba were clearly exhausted. Koneko, in particular, looked the worst of them all.
Rias stepped forward, her expression firm. "Give up, Riser. We've defeated your entire peerage—just surrender already."
Riser let out a condescending laugh. "Riser shall do no such thing! You shall be Riser's bride, one way or another!"
With that, he raised a hand and unleashed a torrent of flames. The team dodged out of the way, but in the next moment, Riser surged forward at an unbelievable speed.
I felt my heart stop.
Before anyone could react, he had Koneko by the throat.
She gasped, struggling against his grip, but he held her tight. She clawed at his hand, trying to pry herself free, but her strength was drained.
Then, Riser's free hand ignited with flames, his expression twisted into something sinister.
Rias's eyes widened in horror. "Riser, stop! What are you doing?!"
Riser's smirk grew crueler. "In a Rating Game, deaths are considered 'accidents.' I'm simply showing you what happens when you go up against someone superior."
My body moved before I could think, pure rage flooding through my veins. I was ready to leap down there and tear him apart myself.
But before I could, a firm hand landed on my shoulder.
I turned sharply to see Sirzechs, his usually kind expression replaced with something serious.
"Wait just a moment," he said, his voice calm but commanding. "If I'm wrong, I'll bring her back myself. Please, trust me."
I clenched my fists so tightly my nails dug into my palms. My entire body was shaking with fury, but I forced myself to sit back down.
Rias was pleading now. "Riser, please, stop this!"
Issei was struggling against his own exhaustion, glaring at Riser with pure hatred. "You bastard!"
Kiba scowled, gripping his sword. "Coward."
Akeno's usual playful demeanor was gone, replaced with cold fury. "How dare you?"
Riser simply laughed, his grip on Koneko tightening. "Hahaha! This is what you get!"
He pulled his flaming fist back, ready to strike.
"NO!" Rias screamed. "Riser, please—I RESIGN!"
The moment the words left her mouth, Koneko's body vanished from Riser's grasp. The match was over.
Riser was declared the winner.
Sirzechs turned to me, his tone gentle. "She's in the room down the hall, to the left."
I didn't need to be told twice.
I bolted out of the room, sprinting down the hall as fast as my legs could carry me. My heart pounded in my chest, my breathing ragged, but I didn't care. I needed to see her. I needed to know she was okay.
When I reached the infirmary, I saw her lying on a bed. A nurse was carefully tending to her injuries, wrapping her arm in bandages. Koneko's eyes fluttered open slightly, her expression tired but calm.
I let out a shaky breath, relief washing over me.
The nurse finished up and quietly left the room, giving us privacy.
I walked over and sat beside the bed, carefully wrapping my arms around Koneko, pulling her into a gentle hug. "I'm so glad you're safe," I whispered.
She hesitated for a moment before murmuring, "I… I'm sorry. I'm the reason Riser won."
I pulled back just enough to meet her gaze. "Don't you dare think that," I said firmly. "You gave it your all. Riser used a dirty move to win—it's not your fault."
Her golden eyes softened, and a small, tired smile appeared on her lips. "Thank you…"
She was already starting to drift off. I pulled away, reaching into my inventory and placing a few potions on the bedside table.
"Rest up," I said softly, brushing a strand of white hair from her face. "I'll be back soon."
As I stepped out of the room, I nearly ran into someone standing outside.
It was Ravel Phenex.
She looked nervous, shifting slightly on her feet. "You're Koneko's boyfriend, right?" she asked hesitantly.
I nodded.
She took a deep breath, then bowed slightly. "I just wanted to say… I don't approve of how my brother won. And… I'm sorry for what he did."
I felt my chest tighten. My emotions were still raw, and I was struggling to keep my composure.
I forced a small smile, though my voice wavered. "I-It's fine… It's not your fault."
She looked up at me, her expression conflicted, before nodding. "I'll leave you alone now. Again… I'm sorry."
With that, she turned and walked away.
I sighed, running a hand through my hair as I leaned against the wall, trying to calm myself.
Then, I heard Voltaris voice in my mind.
"Are you going to be okay, Shiro?"
