Ash's face lit up with joy, and the familiar electric mouse perched on his shoulder radiated an air of liveliness. Satoshi couldn't help but sigh—most protagonists in manga and novels always seemed to have this kind of infectious energy.

"I actually ran into you in Vermilion City, Satoshi! I thought you had already left." Ash eagerly grabbed Satoshi's arm, dragging him to a seat in the Pokémon Center with an enthusiastic grin, as if he was ready to recount all his experiences in great detail.

"...After our battle, I went to Mt. Moon to train and arrived in Cerulean City the next day. But when I got there, Misty wasn't around. I had to wait a day before she returned, and after that, I challenged her and got my Cascade Badge!"

"Then, I rushed to Vermilion City overnight! Oh, and my Bulbasaur evolved into Ivysaur! Pikachu has also completely accepted me as its Trainer!" Ash beamed, petting Pikachu's head affectionately.

Satoshi looked at Pikachu's docile expression and knew that it had fully recognized Ash. He reached out to gently pat its head, listening to its cheerful "Pika Pika!" cries. He had to admit—anyone who had watched Pokémon had probably dreamed of petting a Pikachu at least once.

However, he hadn't expected Ash to reach Cerulean City a day ahead of him. It was just unfortunate that Misty had still been helping him at Mt. Moon that day, only returning to her gym late at night. What surprised him even more was that Ash's travel route was almost identical to his own.

"By the way, Ash, what do you mean when you said you thought I left?"

"I ran into Gary this morning. When he saw that the Vermilion City Gym Leader was missing, he left right away. He said he was heading to the next city. I figured you'd do the same."

Hearing this, Satoshi chuckled. "So Gary's following the same route too? You guys are moving pretty fast. I only arrived last night. But yeah, I was just about to leave. No point in waiting for Lt. Surge when I don't know when he'll return."

Ash was the kind of person who could befriend anyone in an instant. Once he recognized someone as a friend, he would interact with them warmly and naturally, never making the conversation feel awkward. Satoshi decided to take a break and chat with him for a bit—not because of some "mandatory protagonist interaction" trope, but because he genuinely saw Ash as a worthy rival.

"The Vermilion Gym Leader isn't here, so Ash, aren't you going to leave too?"

"I was going to at first, but I met the 'President of the Pokémon Fan Club.' He told me that a lot of people in Vermilion City have had their Pokémon stolen recently—many club members lost their Pokémon too. He asked me to help investigate..." Ash hesitated, his expression looking a little embarrassed.

Apparently, he had somehow been roped into becoming a member of the Pokémon Fan Club. He wasn't sure if he had really agreed out of kindness or if he had simply been tricked.

"So you agreed? You do realize this won't be a simple case, right? You're not a detective, and it's not something you can solve overnight. What if you get stuck here indefinitely because of this?" Satoshi smirked.

Ash scratched his head, sighing. "Yeah, I know it's not easy, but they looked so desperate... I couldn't just ignore them. Besides, they already did some investigating, and they think this case is connected to the S.S. Anne!"

"They even gave me an S.S. Ticket and asked me to check it out! And come on, this is the legendary luxury cruise ship! If someone hands you an S.S. Ticket and you don't go, that's a huge loss!"

At the end of his explanation, Ash sounded more excited about the cruise than the actual investigation. He proudly took out his S.S. Ticket and showed it to Satoshi. Even though it was a second-class ticket, the price was still steep. The S.S. Anne was designed for the wealthy, and even its second-class accommodations were luxurious.

"By the way, Satoshi, do you want to come with me? If this Pokémon theft case is linked to a criminal group, I'd feel a lot better with your help!"

"If you and I team up, unless we're up against someone as strong as a Gym Leader, no one can stop us! And there's no way the culprit is that strong, right?"

Ash's eyes were wide with anticipation as he grabbed Satoshi's arm, practically begging him to accept.

Satoshi sighed. "Ash, do you have to jinx us like that?"

Ash. S.S. Anne. Pokémon theft. Gym Leader.

As soon as Satoshi heard these key phrases—especially 'S.S. Anne'—his memories of the plot resurfaced. And then, as if perfectly timed, Ash confidently declared that the enemy wouldn't be a Gym Leader.

Please. The enemy in this case was a Gym Leader.

Satoshi groaned internally. Ash's ability to unknowingly set up flags was too powerful. He had just boldly claimed that their opponent wouldn't be that strong, which pretty much guaranteed that they would be.

And sure enough—

[Ding! You have received an invitation from Ash and triggered a hidden mission: The Pokémon Theft Incident on the S.S. Anne.]

[Mission Objective: Investigate the theft with Ash and uncover the culprits.]

[Warning! This mission has a high difficulty rating. Estimated player defeat probability: 54%. Please carefully consider before accepting.]

Satoshi sucked in a breath. This was the first time he had ever received a warning like this. A 54% chance of defeat?

That meant their opponent was seriously strong. Worse yet, this hinted that the enemy might go all out.

In the original story, the opponent clearly didn't bring their main Pokémon. If they had, the original Ash wouldn't have stood a chance. But now, with things deviating from the original plot and Pokémon Generations being unpredictable, there was no way to tell whether the opponent would be holding back or not.

If the enemy brought their full team, could Satoshi and Ash—both only Advanced Trainers at this stage—really take them down together?
