"Hello, is anyone there?"
Satoshi knocked on the door of Cape Cottage, waiting for a response.
However, no matter how many times he knocked, no one answered.
"Is he not home? Maybe he's out in the wild studying Pokémon…"
It was a reasonable guess.
Bill, the person who lived here, was a Pokémon researcher.
Given his passion for Pokémon, it wouldn't be surprising if he had gone out to study them.
Bill wasn't just any researcher.
He had invented countless tools that benefited Trainers worldwide.
The most famous of them all?
The Pokémon Storage System.
Thanks to him, Pokémon could be stored, transferred, and accessed from anywhere in the world.
His inventions were integral to how Trainers lived.
Satoshi frowned.
"If he's out in the wild… that means I can't complete the hidden quest right now."
That was a problem.
Satoshi wanted to clear this quest quickly and move on to the next city before nightfall.
To Wait or Not to Wait?
Satoshi debated his options.
1. Leave now.
If he left, another player might complete the quest before him.
Hidden quests had one-time rewards, so once claimed, they were gone forever.
2. Stay and wait for Bill.
He would have to return to Cerulean City for the night.
He had just said goodbye to Misty—returning so soon would feel awkward.
Satoshi sighed.
"Giving up on hidden quests isn't an option."
His entire strategy revolved around securing early-game advantages before other players could.
He had already benefited immensely from previous hidden quests.
One of the best rewards so far?
Exp. Share.
Without it, leveling his Pokémon while progressing rapidly would have been impossible.
Satoshi checked his Pokémon's levels.
All of them were Level 34.
"If I evolve Charmeleon into Charizard… I can fly."
This wasn't something he would normally do, but in this case, it was the best solution.
Flying would allow him to complete the quest and reach the next city on time.
Why Don't Players Use Flying Pokémon for Travel?
Most Trainers in Pokémon Generations didn't rely on Flying Pokémon for long-distance travel.
Why?
1. Flying bypassed battles.
Walking allowed Trainers to level up, find rare encounters, and discover hidden quests.
Flying skipped all of that.
2. The game was meant to be experienced.
Flying everywhere removed the sense of adventure.
Most serious players preferred the journey.
Satoshi was no exception.
But right now?
He needed to use Flying—just this once.
"Alright, new plan: Train Charmeleon until it evolves into Charizard, complete the quest, then fly to the next city."
Satisfied with his decision, Satoshi released Charmeleon and headed into the nearby forest.
The first wild Pokémon he encountered?
Raticate.
A large, brown rat with sharp front teeth, scurrying along the ground.
But something felt off about this Raticate.
Instead of running away, it was dragging a small log across the ground.
It looked oddly human-like…
Satoshi hesitated for a moment but then shook his head.
"Whatever. It's still a wild Pokémon."
"Charmeleon! Flamethrower!"
Just as Charmeleon was about to launch its attack, the Raticate suddenly turned around.
And Satoshi froze.
The Raticate's face wasn't normal.
It wasn't a Pokémon's face at all.
Instead—
It had the face of a human.
And worse—
It was smiling at him.
Then, in a perfectly clear voice, it spoke.
"Finally! Someone's here! I thought no one ever visited this remote place anymore—WAIT!!! DON'T ATTACK ME!! I'M HUMAN!! FRIENDLY!!"
"WHAT THE HELL?!"
Satoshi staggered back, his mind racing.
"A talking, human-faced Raticate?! What kind of horror movie is this?!"
"Charmeleon, attack it now!"
Charmeleon's flames roared to life.
At the same time, the Raticate (or whatever it was) jumped up and down in a panic.
"WAIT, WAIT!! I'M REALLY HUMAN! DON'T KILL ME!!"
Satoshi suddenly remembered something.
In one of the Pokémon comics, there was a story where Bill accidentally merged with a Pokémon.
In that version, he had fused with Rattata.
Here?
Apparently, he had fused with Raticate instead.
Half of Satoshi's reaction was genuine fear.
But the other half?
He was messing with Bill on purpose.
"Oh, I KNOW you're human, Bill. But you still scared the hell out of me!"
Satoshi smirked.
"You think I'm gonna let you off the hook just like that?"
Bill jumped around frantically.
"STOP!! You're gonna roast me!!"
Satoshi grinned wider.
"Oh, don't worry. Charmeleon won't actually attack you… I made sure of that."
Bill finally paused.
"...Wait, what?"
Satoshi crossed his arms.
"I used the power of Viridian, remember? Charmeleon was only going to pretend to attack you."
"...So you were messing with me?!"
Satoshi grinned even wider.
"Yep."
Bill collapsed to the ground.
"YOU SCARED ME TO DEATH!!"
Satoshi shrugged.
"You scared me first."
