Chapter 319 - 319. Puny Human

----

Kai moved with light, careful steps, inching closer to the Larvitar. But even with his utmost caution, once he got near enough, he still startled it.

The moment Larvitar saw the human, it flinched in alarm and bolted without a second thought!

Trying to run?

Not a chance!

This was one of the few Pokémon from the Johto region that Kai actually liked. Now that he'd finally come across one, how could he possibly let it get away!?

With a snap of his fingers, and just as Larvitar had darted a dozen meters away, Charizard suddenly descended from the sky, cutting off its escape route!

Larvitar looked up at the towering Charizard looming before it, who clearly didn't have the friendliest expression. Realizing it was in trouble, Larvitar quickly turned to flee in the opposite direction!

But before it could go far, a Gengar let out an eerie, cackling "Keh-keh!" and popped out from the shadows of a nearby boulder!

Startled, Larvitar switched directions again only to run straight into the man himself. Panicked, it turned yet again, only to be blocked by a woman!

Now it was completely surrounded with nowhere to run!

A grin played on Kai's face. For some reason, the scene reminded him of something he'd seen on TV people hunting wild boars in watermelon fields.

At this moment, Larvitar was just like one of those cornered little boars!

And now that he looked at it more closely… the expressions did resemble each other a bit.

"GROWLLLLLLLLLL!"

Larvitar opened its mouth, letting out a warning growl as if to scare them off. But with its tiny frame barely 60 centimetres tall it didn't look threatening at all!

It looked cute!

Neither Charizard, Gengar, nor Sabrina took it seriously.

"Larvitar, calm down," Kai crouched down, speaking gently. "Don't be afraid I'm not a bad person."

!?

Larvitar bared its sharp little fangs at that, while Sabrina couldn't help but stifle a laugh. That line… sounded strangely familiar.

Kai took a Poké Ball from his belt and released his Dratini.

Right then, he truly looked like a villain, his tone dripping with temptation: "You've got only two choices now. Battle my Pokémon. If you lose, you come with me from now on. But if you win, I'll leave you some food as an apology and won't bother you again. So… do you accept?"

Larvitar glanced around no escape. Then it looked at the somewhat cute Dratini before it and let out a low grumble.

Not understanding what it meant, Kai turned to Gengar. "Hey, Gengar, don't just stand there translate. What's it saying?"

Gengar shrugged. "It said, 'Puny Human.'"

"Puny Human?" Kai scratched his chin, then smiled brightly and shook his head at Larvitar. "Did Hulk get reincarnated? Anyways, I can tell you've been struggling alone out here, scavenging for food, always on the run. But if you travel with me, I'll provide you with food and shelter. You'll get to rest in a cosy Poké Ball, shielded from the wind and rain, and you'll eat delicious meals every day. Your quality of life will skyrocket!"

But Larvitar didn't seem moved at all in fact, it grew even more cautious.

Seeing his pitch fall flat, Gengar doubled over in laughter, holding its belly as it howled without a shred of dignity.

Kai shot it an exasperated glance and cleared his throat before standing up.

"All right, enough joking around. Since you can't make a choice, I'll just assume you've agreed to battle!"

With that, he waved his hand and gave Dratini the command: "I'm leaving this capture battle to you go, Dratini, show it what you've got!"

Dratini, who'd clearly been eager for action, launched itself forward immediately.

Forced into the fight, Larvitar had no choice but to retaliate.

The two Pokémon clashed and quickly became entangled in a fierce scuffle.

As they battled, Kai stood to the side, quietly observing Larvitar making no effort to command Dratini.

After all, it was a match between two unevolved Pokémon nothing that could stir up a real storm. Best to let them go at it freely.

Watching for a while, Kai noticed that Larvitar's strength was still quite limited. It didn't know any advanced moves just kept repeating Bite and Tackle, occasionally mixing in a Rock Slide.

Still, compared to other wild unevolved Pokémon, it was somewhat stronger. Otherwise, it wouldn't have survived here on its own.

But even so, it posed little threat to Dratini.

The most telling thing was that while Larvitar fought, it kept stealing wary glances at Charizard and Gengar as if worried those two would suddenly break the rules and ambush it!

With a distracted mind, it couldn't fight at full strength and gradually fell into a disadvantage.

After enduring several of Dratini's attacks, Larvitar tried once more to break free. Using a powerful Tackle, it knocked Dratini back then suddenly unleashed Sandstorm!

It had been hiding that move until now and it worked wonders!

Like a sudden wave rising from still air, sand surged across the field. The swirling dust and tiny stones engulfed everyone, trainers and Pokémon alike, momentarily blinding them.

Seizing the opportunity, Larvitar dashed off in one direction, trying to escape again.

But perhaps it made too much noise while running Dratini soon broke through the sand cloud and caught up, using Wrap to bind Larvitar and slam it to the ground!

That final blow was too much Larvitar fainted on the spot.

"Nice job!"

Kai praised Dratini, then pulled out an empty Poké Ball and tossed it at the downed Larvitar.

The moment the Poké Ball's red light enveloped Larvitar, Dratini was suddenly bathed in a bright white glow as well!

'Huh? That light was it evolving!?'

Come to think of it, Dratini had been with him for a long time and fought in countless battles. It made sense it was time!

The white light quickly faded. A few seconds later, where Dratini once stood, now appeared the newly evolved Dragonair!

Compared to Dratini, Dragonair's body was more slender, covered in gleaming sapphire-blue scales. It had bright, black eyes, a small white horn on its forehead, and two little wing-like fins on either side of its head.

Overjoyed, Kai quickly pulled out his Pokédex and scanned it.

Pokédex: "Beep! Dragonair, the Dragon Pokémon. Dragon type. Like its unevolved form Dratini, it inhabits beautiful seas and lakes and is revered as a sacred Pokémon. Though it has no wings, it has been spotted flying through the sky. It uses its ability to manipulate the weather, riding the wind to soar through the air. It radiates a mysterious aura, storing vast energy within its body, which it channels through the gem-like orbs on its neck and tail to control the weather."

Just then, Larvitar's Poké Ball stopped shaking and gave a soft click as the capture completed.

Excellent another successful capture!

Not only had he obtained his 14th Pokémon Larvitar but Dratini had also evolved into Dragonair. A double win that significantly boosted his strength!

However… he'd now reached the maximum number of Pokémon he could carry. According to the rules, he'd have to send one back immediately.

So who should he send?
