Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: Shadows in the Dark

Chapter 10: Shadows in the Dark

The night was thick with tension. The fire crackled softly, its faint glow keeping the oppressive darkness at bay. Lila lay on her makeshift bed near the shrine's center, her breathing even but shallow. Alex sat by the fire, his spear resting across his lap as the Bloodfang Alpha patrolled the perimeter with slow, deliberate steps.

The corpses they had brought back from the forest—a smaller wolf-like creature, part of a Corrupted Watcher, and the shattered remnants of Alex's first summons—lay neatly arranged near the shrine. Each one was a potential resource, a tool waiting to be used. Alex couldn't afford to leave them idle.

The memory of Lila's earlier warning still echoed in his mind: something had been watching them. He couldn't shake the feeling that it was still out there, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

"Stay sharp," Alex murmured to the Bloodfang. The beast growled softly in response, its glowing eyes scanning the treeline.

An Unexpected Visitor

Hours passed, and the forest remained still. Alex began to wonder if the unease was just paranoia. Maybe the shrine's aura was keeping whatever threat lurked out there at bay.

Then, the Bloodfang froze.

Its growl deepened, and it turned toward the eastern edge of the shrine, where the mist seemed to gather unnaturally thick. Alex stood, gripping his spear tightly.

"What is it?" Lila asked groggily, her voice cutting through the silence.

Alex didn't answer. His eyes were locked on the treeline. Shapes began to form in the mist—humanoid figures, their outlines warped and shifting.

"Stay behind me," Alex said, his voice low.

The mist parted, revealing a single figure. It was tall and gaunt, its pale skin stretched tight over its bones. Its eyes glowed faintly with an eerie blue light, and its hands ended in long, claw-like fingers.

---

Mist Reaper

Type: Advanced Undead

Threat Level: High

Description: A spectral hunter that uses mist to disorient prey. Resistant to physical attacks.

---

The Mist Reaper stepped forward, its movements slow and deliberate. Behind it, more shapes began to emerge—less defined but no less threatening.

"Time to make some reinforcements," Alex muttered, kneeling near the corpses.

---

The Power of Preparation

Alex extended a hand over the nearest body, channeling Summon Lesser Undead. Mana surged through him, and the smaller wolf's body twitched violently before rising to its feet. Its eyes flared green as it stood ready, snapping its teeth in anticipation of a fight.

"Defend the perimeter," Alex commanded, his voice steady.

The undead wolf leapt to the edge of the shrine, positioning itself near the Bloodfang Alpha.

Alex turned to the remains of the Corrupted Watcher. Though it was incomplete, he hoped it was enough. He poured more mana into the body, watching as the pieces fused together into a crude, humanoid figure with glowing runes still faintly etched into its decayed flesh.

---

Summoned Lesser Undead: Watcher Construct

Type: Animated Corpse

Skills: Rune Pulse (Stun Attack)

---

The Mist Reaper hissed, its glowing eyes narrowing as it observed the growing defense.

"Buy me time," Alex told Lila, who was struggling to stand.

She grabbed a burning branch from the fire, nodding grimly. "I'll do what I can."

Lila limped forward, waving the branch to create a wall of flame between the shrine and the advancing mist. The Reaper halted, momentarily deterred, but Alex knew it wouldn't last.

---

Unleashing Necrotic Power

Alex turned his attention to the shrine's statue. Its outstretched hands still felt significant, as though they were meant to channel energy.

"Let's see if you've got more to offer," he muttered, placing his hands on the stone and focusing his mana.

At first, nothing happened. Then, a faint hum filled the air. The statue began to glow, its hands radiating a soft green light. Alex felt a surge of energy flow through him, and a new skill unlocked in his mind.

---

New Skill Unlocked:

Necrotic Lance

Description: Fires a concentrated bolt of necrotic energy, dealing heavy damage to magical and undead enemies.

---

The Mist Reaper surged forward, its claws slicing through the flames.

"Now!" Alex shouted.

The Bloodfang Alpha and the undead wolf leapt at the Reaper, forcing it back with a flurry of bites and slashes. The Watcher Construct raised its hand, a faint pulse of light emanating from its runes. The Reaper staggered, momentarily stunned.

Alex seized the opportunity. He channeled the power of the shrine, forming the glowing Necrotic Lance in his hands.

The Reaper turned toward him, its glowing eyes narrowing as it sensed the threat.

"Too late," Alex growled, hurling the lance with all his might.

The bolt struck the Reaper square in the chest, exploding in a burst of green light. The creature screamed, its form disintegrating into a swirl of mist that quickly dissipated.

The remaining shapes in the fog froze, then vanished as the mist itself began to thin.

---

Aftermath

The shrine fell silent. The Bloodfang Alpha limped back to the center, ichor dripping from its wounds. The undead wolf collapsed into a heap of bones, its brief existence spent.

Alex sagged against the statue, his body trembling from the mana drain. His vision blurred, but he forced himself to stay upright.

Lila approached, her face pale. "You okay?"

"Yeah," Alex said, though his voice was hoarse. "We're alive, aren't we?"

She nodded, glancing at the remains of the undead defenders. "What happens now?"

Alex stared into the fire, his mind racing. The Mist Reaper had been unlike anything he'd faced before, and it was only a matter of time before something worse came for them.

"We need to keep moving," he said finally. "This shrine won't keep us safe forever. But at least now we know what we're up against."

Lila gave a weak laugh. "Good thing you're the necromancer. I'd be dead without you."

Alex didn't respond. His thoughts were already on the road ahead. He'd made progress, but survival was just the beginning. If he wanted answers—and a way out—he'd need to push deeper into this world's mysteries.

As dawn broke over the horizon, Alex and Lila prepared for the next step in their journey. The forest still loomed around them, dark and full of danger, but now they had a chance—a slim one, but a chance nonetheless.
