It had been a few days since the incident with the gathering of monsters.
The Knights of Favonius were still investigating. Such an incident could not be left unresolved, no matter what. However, there had been no new developments so far.
It was almost certain that this was a deliberate act by someone with an agenda. Yet, the person behind it had hidden their tracks well, leaving no evidence behind.
The sunlight streamed through the window as Rosalyne woke up in bed.
The loose neckline of her garment slipped off her shoulder, revealing her fair skin, elegant collarbone, and graceful neck.
This was the place Rosalyne was temporarily staying—a small house in Springvale.
When Rosalyne first arrived in Mondstadt, she didn't know where to stay. It was the people of Springvale who provided her with a place to settle down.
Although it was just a simple little house, Rosalyne was already quite content.
The room didn't have much furniture—just a bed, a set of table and chairs, and a basic wooden wardrobe.
Compared to the conditions she had as a Fatui Harbinger, this place couldn't even come close. Yet, in this moment, Rosaline felt more at peace within.
Knock, knock, knock—
Before Rosalyne could get out of bed, the sound of knocking came from outside the door.
"Irene, are you up yet?" A crisp female voice came from outside the door.
Irene—this was the name Rosalyne used in Springvale. She couldn't use her real name, fearing she might be recognized.
"Just woke up, still in bed. Wait a moment, I'll get dressed and come open the door," Rosalyne replied.
"No need to open the door for me! I just wanted to let you know—I mentioned before that I wanted to give you a set of toiletries, but you said it wasn't necessary. After thinking about it, I've decided you really should have them. As a woman, how can you not have a proper set of toiletries? I'll bring them over tonight."
"Really, that's not necessary. You've already done so much for me, I can't keep accepting things from you," Rosalyne said.
"It's no trouble at all. It's settled then—I'll bring them over tonight. See you this evening!"
Before Rosalyne could say anything more, the sound of footsteps outside gradually faded away. The girl who had just been speaking with her was named Rebecca, a local resident of Springvale.
Since Rosalyne arrived in Springvale, she had received a great deal of help from Rebecca.
Sometimes, Rosalyne wasn't sure how to respond to Rebecca's warmth and enthusiasm.
Letting out a soft sigh, Rosalyne got out of bed, dressed, and put on a black wig—another precaution to conceal her identity.
After eating a simple breakfast of dried rations, she opened the door and stepped outside, waiting for some news.
Not long after, a plainly dressed girl approached from the distance and stopped in front of Rosalyne.
"Miss Ro... Irene, regarding the monster gathering incident from a few days ago, we still haven't identified the mastermind behind it. The one pulling the strings is hiding very well. However, I've uncovered a clue—it seems that the incident might be related to the Fatui," the girl reported.
Rosalyne's expression shifted slightly at this news. She remained silent for a moment before speaking softly:
"Keep investigating."
"Understood," the girl nodded and turned to leave.
"Wait, Rola," Rosalyne called out, stopping her.
"What is it, Miss Irene?" Rola stopped in her tracks and turned around.
"Why are you still following me?" Rosalyne stepped forward slowly. "I'm no longer 'The Fair Lady,' and you're no longer part of the Fatui. You don't have to stay with me. You're free to live the life you want."
Hearing Rosalyne's words, the girl named Rola simply smiled.
"Miss Irene, it's because this is the life I want," Rola replied with a smile.
"...I see," Rosalyne sighed softly but returned a gentle smile. "Thank you, Rola."
"Miss Irene, please go ahead and do what you wish to do. I will always follow you."
The smile lingered on Rosalyne's lips as she looked at the girl before her. A mix of emotions surfaced in her heart. After a long pause, she nodded and said:
"Go on. Be careful."
"Mm, don't worry, Miss Irene," Rola replied confidently.
After speaking, Rola turned and left, her figure gradually disappearing from Rosaline's view.
At that moment, there was a stir among the townsfolk nearby—it seemed someone from outside the town had arrived.
Rosalyne walked over to take a look and saw knights of the Knights of Favonius clad in armor, along with a familiar face.
It was Yu Xie. Yu Xie had arrived in Springvale with a Knight of Favonius, seemingly to investigate something.
From a distance, Rosalyne watched Yu Xie, her heart suddenly filled with a swirl of complicated emotions.
Of course, she wanted to see Yu Xie, to say so many things to him. But at the same time, she felt that now wasn't the right time. She hadn't yet forgiven herself. When she finally reunited with Yu Xie, she wanted to be a new version of herself—a renewed Rosalyne.
And so, Rosalyne simply stood there, watching from afar, without stepping forward.
Yu Xie and the Knight of Favonius had come to Springvale to investigate whether there were any leads about the monster gathering incident. However, after questioning many residents, they found nothing.
The townsfolk had never heard of anything related to such an event.
But as Yu Xie was speaking with one of the residents, he suddenly felt as if someone was watching him.
Trusting his instincts, Yu Xie abruptly turned his head toward the direction of that feeling, only to see nothing.
The area was empty; no one was looking at him. There was only a small house standing there.
Yet, for some reason, his intuition told him that he should check out that house.
Turning to his companion, Yu Xie informed the Knight of Favonius before heading toward the small house.
Standing in front of the house, Yu Xie carefully examined it.
There was nothing particularly special about it—just an ordinary, plain little house.
After a moment of thought, Yu Xie walked up to the door and knocked.
The sound of knocking broke the silence, but there was no response.
From the marks in front of the door, it was clear that someone must have lived here at some point, but at this moment, there seemed to be no one inside.
Yu Xie shrugged and let out a self-deprecating laugh, muttering to himself:
"What am I even thinking?"
After saying that, Yu Xie turned and left.
It wasn't until the sound of footsteps outside faded away that Rosalyne dared to breathe lightly.
Just now, she had been hiding behind the door, holding her breath and doing her best to conceal her presence, which was why Yu Xie hadn't noticed that someone was inside the house.
This was the closest they had been since their parting in Inazuma—only a door apart.
Rosalyne actually felt a bit regretful. If she had just opened the door a moment ago, she could have seen Yu Xie, could have shared everything she had experienced on her journey, could have…
But it's fine… They would meet again, when she was ready.
