Chapter 545 - Chapter 545: Carrion-eating Dogs

  "Dogs that eat humans."

After speaking, Lu Fei rose cautiously and returned to the melon field.

"Eat humans..." Brother Gua's legs went weak. He was just selling melons—how had he gotten entangled in such horror?

You get what you pay for.

This time it's more than just losing a fortune!

If things go wrong, I might even lose my life.

He followed Lu Fei back to the melon field with trembling steps.

'Brother Lu, these melon vines won't cut. What should we do?'

'We can't cut them anymore. Even if we could, the melon's screams would attract that dog.' Lu Fei pondered, his gaze following the melon vines until it settled on their roots.

'Since we can't cut them, we'll uproot them completely.'

With this thought, he immediately took action. Walking to the root of a melon vine, he dug away some surrounding soil and carefully began pulling the vine out.

  This method proved effective.

The human-headed melon stopped screaming. As the roots were gradually extracted, something seemed to be connected beneath the fibrous tendrils.

  Lu Fei applied more strength.

The object being pulled out revealed itself - a rotting human head emerged from the damp soil.

The root fibers had deeply penetrated the head's eyes, nose, and mouth.

  'Oh my god!'

Brother Gua lost his balance and fell to the ground.

These melons were actually grown from human heads!

When Lu Fei tried cutting the root fibers, the melon leaves immediately withered, and the flowers and fruits above fell off on their own.

'This method works! Brother Gua, stop staring - help me! Two more vines left. Hurry up!'

Elated, Lu Fei rolled up the vine and stuffed it into his backpack, then moved to pull another.

Shivering uncontrollably, Brother Gua suppressed his fear and imitated Lu Fei's method of grasping the vine.

Lu Fei moved swiftly, uprooting another melon seedling.

He cut off the roots and stored the vine.

  "Brother Gua, hurry!"

Brother Gua wanted to move faster, but his limbs felt weak and powerless. After half a day of pulling, the rotting human head had only just emerged from the soil.

As Lu Fei was about to help, movement came from the fruit grove.

Xiao Hei immediately ran out of the vegetable patch.

"Damn it, that dog's back again!"

Lu Fei had to abandon the melon vine and hide with Brother Gua again.

The white dog with a skull atop its head leaped into the melon field. It lowered its head to sniff the two rotting human heads, green eyes blazing with furious, icy light.

Raising its head, it arched its back and began moving its powerful limbs, striding step by step out of the vegetable patch.

The terrifying aura made Brother Gua shrink back. His body brushed against nearby plants, causing them to sway with faint rustling sounds.

  Lu Fei immediately frowned.

This slight noise instantly caught the white dog's attention.

Its ears twitched, and with its body enveloped in a sinister aura, it charged toward the direction where the two were hiding.

Lu Fei quickly grabbed a rock and threw it with force in another direction.

  Thud.

  A soft sound.

The white dog immediately pounced toward that location.

Seizing the opportunity, Lu Fei pulled Brother Gua away from their hiding spot.

Sure enough, when the white dog found nothing there, it immediately turned back.

Its eyes glinted with a sinister green light as it lowered its head to sniff the lingering scent in the air, then followed the trail.

  'This is bad!'

The white shadow kept closing in, forcing Lu Fei and Brother Gua to quicken their pace until they broke into a run.

But how could two legs outrun four?

As long as they remained in the mountain hollow, that white dog would inevitably catch up with them.

'Young Lu, maybe we should turn back!' Brother Gua gasped, his legs feeling like lead weights as he stumbled along.

  'No! We're still missing one!'

Lu Fei grabbed another stone and threw it sideways, but the white dog didn't take the bait this time, charging straight after them.

  'I can't... run anymore...'

Brother Gua panted heavily, his steps growing increasingly labored.

  'Climb the tree!'

Lu Fei flung the black umbrella backward while pushing Brother Gua toward a nearby large tree.

The opened umbrella released tendrils of wild, clawing hair that blocked the white dog's path.

The white dog halted warily, its unnerving green eyes fixed intently on the black umbrella.

Brother Gua desperately scrambled up the tree trunk, straddling it while gasping for breath, his entire body drenched in cold sweat.

Lu Fei turned around, drew his Ghost Whip, and strode toward the white dog.

Xiao Hei hid behind him but suddenly found courage, baring teeth at the white dog twice his size with matching ferocity in its eyes.

The white dog's ghastly gaze swept coldly over the human and dog pair before finally settling on Lu Fei.

It paid no heed to the smaller dog's blustering display.

As the saying goes, a biting dog doesn't bark.

The dog made no sound from start to finish, yet it exuded an aura of extreme danger.

Its entire body was covered in pure white fur, with no variegation except for the red skull-like protrusion on its head, the exact opposite of Xiao Hei.

  'Corpse-Eating Dog!'

  Lu Fei narrowed his eyes.

This type of dog was not easy to deal with.

They grew up feeding on human corpses, felt no pain, possessed extraordinary vitality, and would fight to the death once entangled.

'Raising dogs with human corpses, growing vegetables with human heads - the master of this place is no ordinary person!'

The Corpse-Eating Dog moved, circling Lu Fei slowly before suddenly leaping up with explosive force, lunging ferociously towards him.

Its movements were swift and sudden as lightning.

A sinister wind brushed against his face.

Xiao Hei immediately hid behind, while Lu Fei swung his whip with full force.

The Corpse-Eating Dog dodged nimbly, baring its sharp fangs to bite at Lu Fei's throat.

  Lu Fei stepped back quickly.

Streaks of black hair shot forward, aiming to grasp the dog's spine.

The dog flipped mid-air, evaded the hair, then charged with thunderous speed using its powerful limbs to circle behind Lu Fei, launching another attack.

The black hair arrived just in time, shielding like armor against the dog's teeth before coiling around its neck.

The demonic dog ignored this, frantically tearing at the black hair.

Red petals scattered, as an eye amidst the sea of flowers trembled faintly, seeming ready to open.

'Xiao San, wait!' Lu Fei urgently stopped it while striking his whip at the dog's forehead.

This Corpse-Eating Dog still had its master - the Ghost Eye shouldn't be wasted on it.

  Snap!

Black hair tightly entangled the ghoul dog.

The whip struck the fleshy tumor with precision, but unexpectedly, the skull on it suddenly opened its mouth and clamped onto the whip.

The skull's teeth were as sharp as the ghoul dog's, instantly biting through the willow whip.

  "It's broken!""

Lu Fei immediately furrowed his brows.

The willow whip had accompanied him since the shop's opening. Heartbroken, he stored the broken whip and pulled out the lightning-struck jujube wood stick.

Yet after some consideration, he still refrained from attacking.

The thunderous noise would surely alert the vegetable plot's owner. They only had two days - obtaining the last melon seedling now was paramount.

His initial restraint against attacking the dog was also to avoid complications.

"Xiao San, hold it off a while longer!""

Gritting his teeth, Lu Fei rushed back into the vegetable patch.

The ghoul dog struggled madly against the constricting black hair, its mouth full of broken strands. With terrifying strength, it actually began dragging the hair mass toward the crops.

From the tall tree, Brother Gua watched this scene trembling, barely maintaining consciousness through sheer willpower.

Lu Fei moved swiftly, nearly uprooting the final melon seedling.

The ghoul dog's green eyes flickered urgently as the crimson skull-shaped tumor on its head suddenly gaped open, emitting piercing canine shrieks.
