Chapter 17 - Chapter 17

I padded over to a small pond, eager to see my new form in its reflection. What I saw made me pause in wonder. No longer was I the tiny cub that had first awakened in this world. I had grown to the size of a teenage tiger, my frame now powerful and imposing. My muscles rippled beneath my silvery-white coat, more defined than before. I extended my claws, noticing how they gleamed in the moonlight—longer, sharper, and deadlier.

"Look at you," I whispered to my reflection. "You've come a long way from that scared little cub."

The transformation wasn't just about size. My entire presence felt different—more commanding, more predatory. The crescent markings along my spine pulsed with a soft silver light, responding to the moonlight overhead.

I needed to test these new abilities properly. Turning away from the pond, I made my way to an open clearing where I'd have space to unleash my power without constraints. The full moon hung overhead, bathing everything in silvery light that seemed to energize me with each step.

Standing in the center of the clearing, I focused on my mana core, drawing power into my front right paw. The energy gathered quickly, far more responsive than I expected.

"Moon Slash!"

With a powerful swipe, I released the energy. A crescent-shaped wave of silver-blue light erupted from my paw, cutting through the air with a sound like tearing silk. The energy blade traveled twenty feet before slicing cleanly through a large boulder. The two halves of the stone fell apart, their edges gleaming with frost where the slash had cut.

"Whoa," I breathed, staring at the destruction I'd caused with a single attack.

I noticed something interesting—the mana drain was significant, but less than I'd anticipated. Something about the moonlight seemed to reduce the cost of the technique. I tried again, this time focusing more intently, allowing the energy to build and concentrate.

"Charged Moon Slash!"

This time, the crescent wave was narrower but more intense, glowing with blinding silver light. It shot forward with incredible speed and struck another boulder. Instead of merely slicing through it, the concentrated energy exploded on impact, shattering the massive stone into hundreds of fragments.

The mana cost was much higher this time, but the destructive power was undeniable.

I bounded away from the clearing, eager to test my newfound speed and agility. The forest became a blur as I dashed between trees, my paws barely touching the ground before pushing off again. What once felt like effort now came naturally—my muscles responded instantly to each command, propelling me forward with twice the speed I'd had before.

"This is incredible!" I laughed, leaping onto a low-hanging branch.

I sprang from tree to tree, testing my limits. The distance I could jump had doubled, maybe tripled. A ravine that would have stopped me before now presented no challenge—I cleared it with a single bound, landing gracefully on the other side.

I zigzagged through a dense patch of trees, deliberately making sharp turns and sudden changes in direction. My body responded perfectly, allowing me to weave through obstacles without losing momentum. The moonlight seemed to guide me, enhancing my night vision and making every movement feel natural.

After running for what felt like miles, I stopped in another clearing to catch my breath. I wasn't even winded.

"Time to work on something else," I muttered, focusing on my ice magic.

I started with Ice Spikes, conjuring a single frozen shard that shot forward and embedded itself in a tree trunk. Next, I tried creating two simultaneously, then three, then five. With each attempt, I refined my control, directing the spikes with increasing precision.

"Let's push it further."

Concentrating deeply, I summoned ten Ice Spikes at once, arranging them in a perfect circle around me before sending them flying outward in all directions. They struck their targets with deadly accuracy.

Moving on to Ice Wall, I practiced creating barriers of different shapes and sizes. I managed to form a complete dome around myself, then dispelled it with a thought.

"Now for something more interesting."

I coated my claws in ice, turning them into even deadlier weapons. Then I froze the ground in front of me, creating a slick path leading to a tree stump. Charging forward, I slid across the ice, building momentum before launching myself at the target. My ice-coated claws sliced through the wood like it was butter.

For my final exercise, I experimented with frost mist, creating a swirling cloud around me that obscured my presence while simultaneously forming an Ice Spear above my head.

After hours of training, I collapsed onto my haunches, my breath coming in deep pants. Despite my new power, I was nearly drained.

[Warning: Host's mana reserves at 12%. Continued exertion may result in mana exhaustion.]

"Thanks for the update," I grumbled, rolling my eyes. "I kind of figured that out when my last Ice Spear came out the size of a toothpick."

[Observation: Host's sarcasm remains inefficient at replenishing mana.]

I couldn't help but laugh. "Fair point. So what's the best way to balance these new abilities? The moon skills hit harder, but they're draining me faster."

[Analysis: Moon-based abilities consume 37% more mana than equivalent ice techniques. Recommendation: Reserve moon skills for critical combat situations. Focus on ice magic for routine encounters.]

That made sense. I needed to be smarter about how I used my energy. Standing up, I began practicing again, this time alternating between small ice projectiles and brief bursts of moon energy.

"I need to find the sweet spot," I muttered, focusing on controlling the exact amount of mana I channeled.

Instead of massive Ice Walls, I created thin barriers. Rather than full Moon Slashes, I practiced coating just my claws with lunar energy. Each repetition became more efficient than the last.

[Host's mana efficiency has increased by 8%.]

"Only eight percent? I've been at this for hours!"

[Mastery requires time. Patience is efficient.]

I growled but kept at it. I started combining physical movements with controlled magic use—pouncing while maintaining an Ice Spike, sprinting while sustaining a thin layer of frost around my paws. My muscles burned and my mana reserves flickered dangerously low, but I pushed through.

After three more hours, I'd managed to increase my efficiency by another 15%. Not amazing, but progress.

"Time to see what's beyond my usual hunting grounds," I decided, padding deeper into the forest than I'd ever ventured before.

The trees grew denser here, their canopies blocking most of the sunlight. Strange blue mushrooms glowed along the forest floor, providing just enough light to navigate by. I sniffed one cautiously.

[Caution: Luminous Azure Caps. Properties: Mild hallucinogenic effect if consumed. Potential alchemy ingredient.]

"Good to know," I whispered, making a mental note of their location.

As I moved deeper, I spotted clusters of small, unranked beasts—mostly rodents and small birds that scattered at my approach. Nothing worth hunting.

A sweet, almost minty scent caught my attention. Following it, I discovered a patch of silver-veined leaves growing beside a small stream.

[Identification: Moonmint. Common herb that enhances mana regeneration when brewed. Current market value: 1 gold per leaf.]

"Now that's useful," I murmured, carefully collecting several leaves in my inventory.

I continued exploring until a gentle rushing sound caught my attention. Following it, I pushed through a curtain of hanging vines to discover a breathtaking sight—a small waterfall cascading down moss-covered rocks into a crystal-clear lake. Moonlight reflected off the water's surface, creating dancing patterns of light that reminded me of stars.

"This is perfect," I whispered, padding to the water's edge.

I dipped my paw in, surprised by the pleasant warmth. This wasn't like the cold mountain streams I'd encountered before—this water felt inviting, almost therapeutic. Without hesitation, I waded in, sighing as the water enveloped my tired muscles.

Floating on my back, I gazed up at the stars visible through the gap in the forest canopy. The tension in my body slowly melted away, replaced by a deep sense of contentment.

"I've come so far," I mused, watching the moon's reflection ripple on the water's surface. "From a scared little cub to... whatever I am now."

My new abilities gave me confidence, but something was missing. Training against trees and rocks could only take me so far.

"I need a real challenge," I muttered, flicking water with my paw. "Something that will push me to my limits."

As if responding to my thoughts, the system chimed in.

[Analysis complete: Host has successfully adapted to evolutionary changes. Combat efficiency with new abilities has reached 87% of optimal potential.]

I perked up, swimming back to shore and shaking the water from my fur. "Only eighty-seven percent? What do I need to do to reach full potential?"

[Recommendation: Host requires practical combat experience against higher-ranked opponents. Theoretical knowledge and isolated training have limitations. Seek out Rank 2 or Rank 3 beasts to fully test evolutionary capabilities.]

"Rank 3?" I repeated, somewhat surprised. "You think I'm ready for that?"

[Host's current capabilities exceed most Rank 2 beasts. A Rank 3 opponent would provide optimal challenge without excessive risk.]

I sat on my haunches, considering this. The system wasn't wrong—I'd mastered the basics of my new abilities, but I wouldn't know their true potential until I faced a worthy opponent.

"Alright then," I said, standing up with renewed determination. "Time to find something that can actually fight back."
