Chapter 236 - Chapter 236: The Only Choice

Professor Flitwick waved his wand, and a stack of white papers scattered and flew toward each student.

Wade reached out to catch the sheet of paper in front of him, and noticed that it listed the elective courses, their schedules, locations, and a brief description.

At the bottom, there was also a section outlining which courses were required for various professions.

The classroom buzzed with discussions.

"Don't rush, children, don't rush."

Professor Flitwick waved his arms and said: "Any hasty decisions are likely to lead to mistakes. Take your time to think carefully. And… happy holidays."

...

"Oh, there's no way I'll have a happy holiday," Theo said gloomily in the umbrella room. "My family keeps writing to me with suggestions for my elective courses."

"Same here," Neville said nervously. "Everyone's saying different things, and I don't know whose advice to follow."

"Why don't we sort through everyone's opinions?" Wade suggested. "While others' advice can be helpful, we don't need to accept everything. Just pick the parts that benefit us the most."

"That's a great idea!"

Neville eagerly brought out all his letters and looked at Wade expectantly.

To be honest, when it came to this sort of thing, Neville trusted Wade more than his own family.

Neville's grandmother placed enormous, almost unrealistic expectations on him, which stressed him out.

Meanwhile, his uncle and other relatives took a pessimistic view, thinking that passing more than two OWLs would already be a victory for Neville.

But Wade approached things based on Neville's abilities and practical needs.

Soon, Theo, Michael, Padma, and others also sorted out their parents' and elders' suggestions.

After consulting everyone, Harry even brought Ron into the group, worried he might make a poor choice.

Ron, a bit awkward, said in a deliberately casual tone, "Honestly, I just want to drop Potions."

"So do I," Harry agreed wholeheartedly.

"But we have to stick with the core subjects. Otherwise… it'd be nice to just take a few easy ones," Michael sighed with emotion.

Wade pulled out a large whiteboard and started listing the courses:

–Ancient Runes

–Divination

–Arithmancy

–Care of Magical Creatures

–Muggle Studies

Neville held a letter and, after skimming through it, said:

"My uncle says Arithmancy is extremely hard to learn. It requires memorizing loads of charts, and he thinks I'd be wasting my time on it since I'll never be able to understand it."

Wade wrote next to Arithmancy: [High difficulty. Requirements: strong memory, strong arithmetic skills].

"He also says not to take Ancient Runes—that it involves memorizing tons of words and pronunciations. He says if I take this course, I won't even be able to write the number '0.' Is that true, Wade?" Neville asked.

Wade chuckled and said, "It's not that extreme, but '0' in Ancient Runes is Demiguise, which is the same as the name of the magical creature. The pronunciation, however, is…"

He then pronounced it, twisting his tongue around a word that sounded far removed from English.

Wade continued:

"Many Ancient Runes characters have two or more pronunciations, depending on their context. Moreover, the writing direction can change. Sometimes you have to switch directions as you write, and this shift affects the meaning being conveyed."

Neville was astonished. "That sounds way too complicated."

Without hesitation, he crossed both Ancient Runes and Arithmancy off his list of potential electives.

Most of the others who were listening quietly made similar decisions to avoid these two subjects—except for Hermione, who seemed entirely unfazed.

"I have a letter here too," Theo said, pulling out an aged envelope.

"Oh, it's from my cousin," he explained. "She says if you're just looking to pass and get a certificate, Divination is the best choice."

Neville hesitated. "My grandmother says it's nonsense and told me not to pick it."

George, holding one of Ron's letters, read aloud, "For those truly gifted, Divination is a fascinating and useful subject… Wow, the ability to predict the future."

"That must've been Percy who wrote that! He's at school and still sent a letter?"

Fred grabbed the letter, confirming it with a glance, and then hung onto George's shoulder, laughing. "He even says… 'I don't think you have the aptitude for it'… Hahaha!"

Ron, red-faced, snatched the letter back. "Percy took every elective himself. He probably knows more about them than you two do!"

"Oh?" Fred raised an eyebrow. "So, what 'useful' advice did Percy give you?"

Ron stammered, unable to reply.

In reality, after analyzing the options thoroughly, Percy had recommended two courses that were easy to score well in and still useful for the future:

Care of Magical Creatures and Muggle Studies.

[Care of Magical Creatures is relatively interesting, and the exams are relatively easy to pass. As for Muggle Studies, given our father's influence, I think it wouldn't be too challenging for you...]

Percy's advice was quite reasonable, but after reading the letter, Ron secretly crossed Muggle Studies off his list and decided to opt for Divination instead.

This was because Percy had also written:

[This is a completely pointless course. As long as you're willing to make things up, Professor Trelawney will give high marks without caring whether the student has actually made a prediction. In fact, I seriously doubt she has even half the skills she claims to possess...]

[I only chose this class to complete the honor of earning twelve OWLs, but for you, I don't think that's necessary...]

Ron zeroed in on the phrase "gives high marks easily" and immediately made Divination his first choice.

However, admitting this out loud would feel like admitting he wasn't very clever. He hesitated for a while, keeping his thoughts to himself, and instead objectively described Percy's opinions about the various courses.

Wade compiled everyone's letters, adding more detailed notes to the chart. Once the final letter was organized, almost every confused student had a clearer idea of what to choose.

Putting down the chalk, Wade said, "Although the opinions differ, there are some common threads."

"Both Arithmancy and Ancient Runes are very challenging, requiring extensive memorization and study. The other three courses are comparatively easier."

"Care of Magical Creatures focuses on practical work. Muggle Studies involves a fair amount of memorization. Divination is easy to score well in, but the professor's reputation isn't great, and you're unlikely to learn anything truly useful from it."

"Have you all decided on your choices?"

"Wade, what about you? What courses are you taking?" Michael asked.

Wade smiled and said, "Of course… all of them."

For him, this was the only choice.

The only way… to obtain the Time-Turner.
