Chapter 10 - Rising Tides

After the match, Lucas's phone buzzed non-stop. Message after message poured in—family, friends, old teammates, and even former coaches from his early days in Brazil. His social media accounts exploded with praise. One video clip, showing his assist to Neymar, had already gone viral, garnering thousands of comments in minutes. It was surreal.

He sat alone for a moment in the corner of the locker room, the sound of celebration around him dimmed by the whirlwind of thoughts in his mind. He had dreamed of moments like this since he was a boy kicking a worn-out ball around dusty streets. Now he was here, playing with Brazil's finest, representing his country. A dream realized, but one that felt like just the beginning.

The Brazil coach approached him, his expression firm yet encouraging. "You did well out there, Lucas," he said, placing a hand on Lucas's shoulder. "Keep working hard, and there will be more opportunities for you."

Lucas stood, eyes bright with determination. "Thank you, Coach. I will. I promise."

Later that evening, as the adrenaline wore off and the quiet of night settled in, Lucas called home. The familiar sound of João's voice filled his ears.

"Lucas, you were incredible!" João's voice brimmed with pride and excitement. "Everyone here is talking about you. The whole neighborhood was watching. Even Mr. Silva said he nearly cried watching you assist Neymar. Can you believe that?"

Lucas laughed, deeply touched. "Thanks, Dad. I couldn't have done it without your support. I'm so happy to make you proud."

"We've always been proud, son," João replied. "But seeing the world recognize your talent… it's special. Your sister's been telling everyone at school you're her hero."

Lucas's heart swelled with emotion. "Tell her I miss her. And give Mom a hug for me."

That night, Lucas lay in bed staring at the ceiling, reflecting. From the rugged fields of their small town to dazzling stadiums filled with cheering fans—it felt like a storybook. But it hadn't come easy. He remembered the sacrifices, the rejection, the days when his dream felt impossible. Yet here he was. And he wasn't done yet.

Returning to Palmeiras after the national team experience felt like coming home, but things had changed. His teammates welcomed him with applause and playful teasing. "Look who's too famous to sit with us now!" Tiago joked, tossing Lucas a water bottle. "You assist Neymar one time and forget us small guys?"

Lucas laughed. "Never. You're still the reason I get half my assists."

There was a new layer of respect in the way they looked at him. Coaches watched him closely, fans shouted his name louder than ever, and analysts now ranked him among the most promising young talents in the league.

Yet, through it all, Lucas stayed grounded. He trained harder than ever, showed up early, stayed late, and kept pushing his limits. Goals came often—curlers from outside the box, composed finishes under pressure—but so did assists. Lucas had developed an eye for opportunity, threading passes through tight spaces and setting his teammates up with precision.

His balance on the pitch mirrored his life off it. Despite the rising fame, Lucas stayed connected to what mattered most—his family.

Almost every evening, he'd call home. On one such call, Sofia grinned as she showed him a miniature football stadium made from cardboard and colored paper.

"Look, Lucas! I made it for art class. That's you right there—number 10!" she said, pointing proudly at a small figure in the center of the model.

Lucas chuckled. "That's amazing, Sofia! I love it. You're a real artist."

Maria appeared next, cradling their new puppy. "Max has already chewed one of your old shoes, by the way."

Lucas laughed again, missing home more than ever. "He's already a footballer then."

João leaned into the frame, beaming. "Lucas, people are stopping me in the street just to shake my hand. You've made all of us proud."

But it wasn't just the good moments that Lucas shared. He also opened up about the challenges—tough matches, harsh critics, and the mental toll of expectations.

One evening, during a particularly exhausting week of travel and training, Lucas sat alone in his apartment, preparing meals for the week. His phone rang—Gabriel.

"Hey, champ," Gabriel said. "Just checking in. You managing everything okay?"

Lucas exhaled. "Trying to. It's been non-stop lately. Matches, media, training... Sometimes I barely breathe."

Gabriel's voice turned serious. "Then take a moment to breathe. Balance is important, Lucas. Burnout is real. Trust me."

Lucas nodded slowly. "I hear you. I'll work on it."

Following Gabriel's advice, Lucas began incorporating meditation and mindfulness into his routine. He started journaling, practicing breathing exercises before games, and carving out time for things he enjoyed—reading, sketching, and even cooking.

The Brazilian league season was intense. Each week brought a new challenge. One match against a particularly aggressive top-tier team pushed Lucas to his limits. They had clearly singled him out, double-marking him and cutting off his space.

Frustrated but focused, Lucas reminded himself of his training. He stayed patient, found pockets of space, and waited for the right moment. In the 82nd minute, Tiago intercepted a pass and sent the ball forward. Lucas sprinted, weaving through the defenders, and struck the ball with precision. It soared into the top corner.

The stadium erupted.

After the match, Coach Mendes clapped him on the back. "Outstanding, Lucas. You kept your cool and delivered when it mattered most."

Lucas nodded, drenched in sweat but glowing with satisfaction. Moments like that made all the hard work worth it.

As his popularity grew, Lucas began receiving letters and messages from young fans across Brazil. One stood out—a handwritten letter from a boy named Pedro.

"Dear Lucas, you are my hero. I want to be like you. Can you tell me how to be a great footballer?"

Lucas smiled, deeply moved. He penned a personal reply:

"Dear Pedro,Thank you for your kind words. I'm honored to be your hero. To be great, always believe in yourself. Train hard, stay humble, and play with heart. Never stop dreaming.Best wishes,Lucas."

It was a small gesture, but one that meant the world to Pedro—and to Lucas.

As the season progressed, Lucas's life remained a balancing act. Fame brought attention, but also pressure. Victories were celebrated, but defeats were dissected.

Yet, through it all, Lucas never lost sight of who he was and where he came from.

He kept showing up—on the field, for his family, for his fans, and most importantly, for himself.

And every night, as he lay in bed, staring at the ceiling of his modest apartment, he felt peace. Because he knew he was exactly where he needed to be.

The road ahead was long, filled with challenges yet unseen.

But Lucas was ready.

His dreams were within reach—and he would chase them with everything he had.
