The Red Fox looked over the wall and then slipped onto the rooftop. It climbed up the ridge and reached the backyard, where two children were playing, and a woman was sewing shoe soles in the yard. When the Red Fox peeked down, the woman suddenly looked up and said,
"Eh... where did this fox spirit come from?"
Her words caused the fur on the back of the Red Fox's neck to stand up, and, frightened, it took two steps back, making the roof tiles crackle underfoot,
"How... how did she see my true body!"
But that wasn't the scariest part; just as the woman's voice fell, someone in the house responded. It was a man's voice,
"A fox spirit... that can't yet transform into human form, but with a few more years of training, it should be possible. Catch it to let the children play with it!"
