Chapter 4 - — Diviners

"Alfen," Deon said coldly as he approached him. "I see you've been running away from us for quite some time now."

Alfen stood up slowly, trying to keep his composure despite the fear that gripped him. "What do you want from me?" he asked quietly.

Deon smiled cruelly as he reached out to grab Alfen by the collar of his shirt. "We want you back," he said menacingly. "You know too much about Ultima and what we're doing with its power."

Alfen struggled against Deon's grip, but it was no use – the imperial soldier was far stronger than him. As they dragged him away towards their camp, Alfen knew that his life would never be the same again – and that this time, there would be no escape from the horrors of Ultima's wrath.

"Alfen." Deon spoke once again. "I don't want to do this. But I have to." Alfen looked at him, a desperate expression of his face. "Why? What did I ever do to you, Deon?! Why do you need to betray me?! What did I do to deserve all of this?!" Deon's expression didn't change. "You were born."

"What?"

"You heard me. You were born. You're too dangerous, Alfen. I'm sorry. As the diviner of light, the great host of the light keeper, Bahamut. You're going to have to die."

Alfen's heart raced as he stared at Deon, his best friend since childhood. He couldn't believe what he was hearing. The diviner of light, the one who hosted Bahamut, wanted to kill him? It didn't make any sense.

"Why?" Alfen whispered, his voice barely above a whisper. "Why do you want to kill me?"

Deon looked at him with a cold, calculating gaze. "You were born, Alfen. You were born with the power to destroy Ultima. A power so great that it could bring about the end of the world."

Alfen shook his head, disbelief etched on his face. "That's not true. I don't have that kind of power."

Deon smiled sadly. "It doesn't matter if you believe it or not, Alfen. The fact remains that you are a threat to our world."

Alfen felt a sudden surge of anger welling up inside him. How could Deon betray him like this? They had been through so much together! But as he looked into Deon's eyes, he realized that there was no turning back now. Deon was determined to kill him, and there was nothing he could do to stop it.

And then suddenly everything went black, he heard roars. And the strikes of lightning and flashes of fire. He heard the rumbling of giant beasts fighting. And a sound that sounded like a beam of light. And then he woke up, inside of a crater.

He looked up to see a great dragon in the sky. It was Bahamut. Or, Deon for that matter. He heard the rumbling of the clouds as Bahamut spoke.

"Alfen. You're a monster. I didn't know yet. But what you just did proved to me that you are."

Alfen picked up his sword and held it upwards towards Bahamut. "I'm the monster? I'm sure you're part of the reason those children burned!" Bahamut looked back down at him.

"Destruction does not deserve a pardon in the world of Ultima."

"Then Ultima as well, should not exist."

Alfen's sword started to crackle with blue lightning.

"Come at me, Fiend!"

Bahamut swooped down towards him, he was much bigger than Alfen originally thought. Alfen jumped on Bahamut's back and stabbed his sword into him.

"We have heeded your calls, Destruction. The power of the thief, is yours."

His sword crackled with lightning and struck an extra powerful blow into Bahamut. For some reason he knew the name of this ability. It was a cheap shot. Able to exploit the weakness of anything. Including a great dragon. Bahamut flew into the air, Alfen clenching the blade that was stuck to Bahamut's back.

"Why are you doing this, Deon? Why would you do this to me? I thought we meant more than that."

"Well, you were wrong. I knew you couldn't be trusted. You cause destruction wherever you go, Alfen. You're a curse."

"Why would you even say that?"

Alfen's tears flowed in the open wind. As he took the sword out of Bahamut's back and while holding on to a scale, started stabbing him repeatedly. Exploiting the gaps between the scales and the flesh. Every time he exploited Bahamut's weaknesses a small charge of lightning manifested and it dealt much more damage to Bahamut than a normal strike.

He wondered if it was a perk of the thief, which he assumed, was a path of a beyonder. Perhaps, a critical strike. Once Bahamut started flying straight he ran to his head. Slashing his sword across his eye and jumping off his giant body. That's when he blacked out again. And then he woke up again. And was standing over Deon, in another crater, red lightning crackling around him.

"What the fuck is happening to me…" Alfen said.

Deon tried to sit up but he couldn't, he just saw Alfen looking down at him.

"Don't…don't fucking look at me like that…you're a fucking monster…damn…I can't feel my legs…"

Alfen looked down at him, a dead look in his eyes.

"Sorry, Deon. I wish I could've saved you."

Alfen walked away, he didn't know what was going on with him. But he felt like he was losing and gaining control, over and over again.

The destruction is fueled by bloodlust.
