Chapter 22 - Back to square one

In the bustling streets of the market, the turmoil of impending siege was palpable. People hurriedly sought out necessities to weather the impending storm of conflict. Cereals, potatoes, and unrefined wheat, once common purchases, now commanded exorbitant prices, reflecting the scarcity brought on by the looming threat.

As I navigated through the throngs of anxious shoppers, my mind raced with thoughts of survival. I sought out Hani's workshop, eager to reunite with my brother and Joshua, and to devise a plan that might offer us a chance at survival amidst the chaos. Along the way, I caught sight of Sylvia in the carriage, smiling and waving goodbye, her departure serving as a stark reminder of the uncertain times that lay ahead.

With a reciprocated smile, I watched the carriage disappear into the distance, before turning my attention back to the urgent task at hand. In the midst of the market's frenetic energy, I pondered our next move, acutely aware of the challenges that awaited us in the days to come.

As I arrived at the workshop, Eric's embrace conveyed both relief and concern, a silent acknowledgment of the weight of the news I carried. Joshua, ever the playful soul, couldn't hide his concern either, his usually carefree demeanor overshadowed by the gravity of the situation.

Gathering them close, I shared the details of the county's tense situation, the imminent threat of siege casting a shadow over our once peaceful existence. As we huddled together in the workshop, the reality of our predicament sank in, our thoughts consumed by the uncertainty that loomed on the horizon. But amidst the turmoil, a sense of solidarity emerged, binding us together as we faced the challenges ahead as a united front.

"Are the gold coins I gave you safe?" I inquired anxiously, hoping for a positive response.

Eric's expression softened with reassurance as he nodded. "They've never been touched," he replied, his tone carrying a sense of relief.

A wave of gratitude washed over me, knowing that our precious resources remained untouched amidst the uncertainty. "Thank you, Eric," I said earnestly, grateful for his diligence in safeguarding our meager savings.

Turning to Eric and Joshua, I posed the urgent question: "What do we do now? Things are getting dire, and if the Franc troops arrive, they'll likely pillage the town. It seems they need this stronghold, and they won't hesitate to kill all the townsfolk."

Eric's brow furrowed in contemplation as he considered the gravity of the situation. "We need to prepare for the worst," he replied solemnly. "We should gather whatever supplies we can and fortify our position here in the workshop. It may not be much, but it's our best chance of survival."

Joshua, ever the optimist, chimed in with a hint of determination in his voice. "Maybe we can find a way to escape," he suggested. "If we can't fight them head-on, then we should try to slip away unnoticed. There might be a hidden path or secret passage we can use."

Their suggestions weighed heavily on my mind as I contemplated our options. Fortifying the workshop seemed like a practical choice, but Joshua's idea of escape offered a glimmer of hope in the face of overwhelming odds. We needed to act fast and decisively if we were to have any chance of surviving the impending siege.

With a heavy heart, I nodded in agreement with Joshua. "You're right," I conceded, "we're just children. What more can we do? It's better to find a path for everyone we know to escape through it."

Eric placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "We'll figure something out," he said, his voice filled with determination. "We've faced tough situations before, and we've always found a way through. We just need to stay calm and think clearly."

Feeling a renewed sense of resolve, I turned to Joshua and Eric, gratitude shining in my eyes. "Thank you both," I said sincerely. "Let's start by scouting the area around the workshop. There might be a hidden route or a safer path we can use to lead everyone to safety."

With a shared sense of purpose, we set out to explore our surroundings, determined to find a way to ensure the survival of not just ourselves, but of all those who depended on us.
