IMOGEN'S POV
The sound of Joseph's voice cut through everything else. "Mum!"
My heart stopped. He was three cars ahead, pressed against a window, his small face pale with terror. But he was alive.
David was pulling him toward the back exit of the car, one hand gripped tight around Joseph's wrist. When Joseph saw me, he tried to pull away.
"Let go of me!" Joseph screamed. "I want my mum!"
David's head snapped toward me, his face twisting with rage. "You little shit," he hissed at Joseph. "I told you to keep quiet."
Several passengers were staring now, but David was already moving, dragging Joseph toward the rear door of the car. The train gave another lurch, picking up speed.
I ran.
"Joseph!" I called, pushing past a man with a briefcase.
David kicked open the door between cars, the metal slamming against the wall. The noise between the cars was deafening—wheels on tracks, rushing air, the clatter of the coupling chains.
"Stop!" I shouted, but my voice was lost in the sound.
