Masks come in many varieties, including gas masks, dust masks, masks used solely for decoration and disguise, and of course, bulletproof masks.
Bulletproof masks also come in different types, the most common being the type used by SWAT teams with a transparent visor attached to the front of the helmet, somewhat similar to a half motorcycle helmet. Then there are those that fasten directly onto the face, made out of Kevlar for bulletproof protection.
Bulletproof masks have been around for a long time, but they are seldom used because the visual effect far outweighs the practical value in real combat.
However, bulletproof masks do stop the majority of handgun bullets. All bulletproof masks on the market can at least withstand the force of a 9mm Parabellum bullet from three meters away, as well as shrapnel from grenades. That being said, these masks are pretty much ineffective against rifle bullets and handgun bullets with particularly high penetration power, like the FN 5.7 bullet.
