Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Tomorrow Is A New Day

In the morning, I was taken to practice my arithmetic and reading. I also practiced writing. Well, I suppose it wasn't so much practice, but rather a test. My handwriting isn't the best, but it is decent.

The grammatical structure, from what the tutor says, could use some work. My reading comprehension was about average for a ten-year-old, for not having read in the past six years, that's pretty good.

As for arithmetic, basic addition, subtraction, and multiplication are rather simple, however, anything further I was incapable of. Numbers above the tens of thousands in addition and subtraction were simple, it only got difficult in multiplication.

Numbers past the dozen range started to get difficult. He also tested my historical knowledge. I only knew basic non-specific information. Things like who united the empire, his name, a few elements of current culture, and things of the sort.

Not that I could give any specific dates... Current politics also escaped me, but apparently, my current master and his brother had fought for the throne, but in the end, my master had lost the right to rule.

The tutor avoided most of the matter as he did not want to bad talk my master, or so I presume. After being tested, my tutor taught me some basic division and how to more easily multiply larger numbers.

The day was rather average and uneventful, so I went to sleep and mentally practiced the information I learned today. The next morning I was given a simple worksheet to see how I would do with the new information.

Long multiplication and simple division. I did it. Once I had finished, within only a few minutes mind you, the tutor had taken a look. "One hundred fifty questions in only a few minutes?" He asked. I nodded.

He shrugged and took it, then promptly graded it. I missed three questions. A rather large improvement, especially since I didn't write it out. Seems like a waste of energy to write it out if you can just do it mentally.

"This is quite amazing, come, let's show Master Torrson." He said as he went to exit the study. I silently followed. He knocked on a door to what I assume is Mr. Torrson's study.

"Come in." His voice rang from the other side. The tutor quickly opened the door, revealing Mr. Torrson who was doing paperwork.

"My apologies for interrupting you during your work, but I wanted you to see this." He said as he walked in and gave him the paper.

"A large number of correct equations?" Mr. Torrson asked.

"Yesterday she didn't even know how to do division or long multiplication and she finished this in just seven minutes! This girl is simply incredible!" The tutor said with excitement.

"I see. Speed up her education as necessary." Mr. Torrson said dismissively.

"Certainly. We will be taking our leave now." He said. I was once again directed to the study. After I had finished with my studies, I decided to snoop around again. After a bit of looking around, I noticed that a large amount of the workers are non-human.

The only human workers I have found are the heads of each division. Suffice it to say, Mr. Torrson either likes demi-humans a bit too much or thinks of them as inferior.

Furthermore, the composition of races is noticeable as well. The majority are elves, then dwarves, then beast-men, then other miscellaneous races. After a while, I was brought to eat dinner.

"So, I've been told you are doing well in your studies, how well do you feel like you are doing?" Mr. Torrson asked.

"As well as I am told." I said. Maybe a bit blandly, but it doesn't really matter. "By the way, what are your views on demi-humans?" I asked. I don't really expect a straightforward answer, but I can try.

"What brings this up?" He asked. Well, most things. Putting that aside.

"Most of the servants are demi-human, so I was curious." I said. He sighed.

"They are lesser. Humans exist to conquer. That includes conquering other races." He put it rather simply.

"I see." I responded. I'm not sure if he was satisfied with that response or not. The rest of the meal was eaten in silence and I was brought to my room after it. Is he cautious of me? I wonder.

Well, I guess he at least views me as worth taking care of. For now, I should sleep. Tomorrow is a new day.
