Chapter 1 - Underground in the Village Hidden in the Rain

A child stopped at a storefront located with in an alley. Its displayed merchandise was showcased under dirty glass, and was illuminated by the dim neon lights that flickered overhead. The girl didn't spare a glance at the case, and instead rapped her knuckles on its glass countertop. "SHOPKEEP!" She called out in her young voice.

A stout middle-aged man, with a pair of under-rimmed eyeglasses, peered over the counter. He tilted his head as the space between his eyes pinched. "What do you want?" He asked in an unfriendly manner.

The girl gave a sly smile in response, holding up four fingers as she said "I flushed out the rats which were in Mr. Kanagaki's shop. Killed all eight of them! But now four of my kunai need replacing." Yuura (優空) passed up a small black storage bag, opening up to reveal her remaining 21 kunai.

The store owner gave a grunt, bending down to retrieve the box which held the sharpened steel throwing darts. He looped through four kunai with his two fingers and held them out to her.

"Thank you!" The girl reached up to hand him the money, and neatly collected her knives into her bag. She flipped the bag's cover over, and magnetic lining to the lips of the case silently cinched together.

Exiting the store, the silk-covered little figure became a blue blur, streaking down the tall buildings that made up Amegakure and the small alleyways that made up its backstreets. She finally came upon a tall, grated entrance into the village sewers. Prying open the grate and moving it aside, the girl crawled past the small entrance, before standing up in a cavernous black sewer tunnel. A steady stream of rainwater, all trickled down from the city above, ran at the bottom of the tunnel.

Chakra flowed from her feet to line her open toed shoes, allowing her to stand atop the black waters. It was dark inside the tunnel, the girl's eyes could barely make out the curvature of corrugated metal pipes connected near the sides. No need. She calmly attached a scratched rebreather to her face. All Amegakure students trained their whatever available senses they had in various harsh conditions that presented themselves.

Equipped, she headed down the waterway, towards the sound of falling water.

Atop one of the giant pipes, structured overhead, shadow stirred within the darkness. A pair of eyes gleamed overhead flecked; its irises were a brilliant green, flecked with gold. Rising from his previous sitting position, the boy jumped down from the pipe and landed with a neat splash

"Hurry, or Uten-sensei will have our necks," stated the darker skinned boy, whose thin limbs already foretold the beginning of a lanky adolescence. Souji (総司) gracefully broke out into a run, leading the way through the twisting underground. Eventually, they left the narrow tunnels and entered a giant square entrance which lead to massive chamber known as the Amegakure Flood Tunnel. The chamber was over ten stories tall and outfitted with pillars that weighed over 500 tons. It was properly lit by industrial level lights installed in the ceilings. In the event that a deluge of rainwater should overtake Amegakure and pour in from its surrounding plains wasteland. This chamber would hold all the excess floodwaters, before redirecting it to an underground river that flowed out the village.

However, since its true purpose was only in the case of a dire emergency, the Flood Tunnel was the current training grounds for the Academy of the Village Hidden in the Rain.
