In a world shattered by a celestial war, remnants of godlike power—called Ashen Marks—now dwell within a select few known as Emberborne. These marks bestow incredible, often dangerous abilities linked to the user's soul and emotions, but using them burns away the user’s lifespan. The more powerful the flame, the shorter the life.
The story follows Kael Thorne, a seemingly average teen living in the outskirts of the Citadel, humanity’s last walled sanctuary. After a sudden attack by monstrous beings known as Veilborn, Kael awakens a dormant Ashen Mark—The Eclipsing Flame, a forgotten power once wielded by a traitor to humanity. Branded as a threat, he’s forced to enroll in Obsidian Ward, an academy that trains Emberborne to fight against extinction.
There, Kael must navigate deadly trials, rival Emberborne with marks of their own, and the mystery behind his inherited flame—all while protecting Iria Vell, a childhood friend whose memory is fading each time Kael uses his power. As feelings between them deepen, Kael faces an impossible dilemma: fight to save humanity or protect the person who matters most, knowing every battle brings him closer to death—and erases more of her memory.
